Rosie Duffield could quit Labour over ‘obsessive harassment’ by party members

Rosie Duffield has warned that she could quit Labour after accusing local party members of “obsessive harassment”.

The Canterbury MP, who has revealed receiving threats and abuse over her views on transgender rights and women’s rights, said she was “considering my future in the party very carefully”.

Her comments caught the party leadership by surprise, with a number of senior figures including Sir Keir Starmer understood to have reached out to her on Sunday night to discuss her concerns.

Ms Duffield made headlines in September when she revealed that she would not attend Labour’s party conference after online threats from trans activists.

While she made clear that the controversy was unrelated to her “stance on women’s rights”, Ms Duffield claimed Labour had done nothing to stop alleged mistreatment by local activists.

‘Labour Party have offered me no support at all’

In a series of tweets published on Sunday afternoon, she said: “I am aware of yet more personal, libellous, nasty and fictional c— being published about me again today. All published/written by ex and current Labour members who are clearly absolutely obsessed by my private life for some reason.

“It is obsessive harassment. Neither the Labour Party or either the former or current Leader or the Whips’ Office have done anything at all to stop it, to offer me any support, help or legal assistance.

“Kent Police, Parliamentary Security team and the Speaker’s Office have been helpful but it is the Labour Party that have offered me no support at all since I unexpectedly became an MP 5 years ago. I am today considering my future in the Party very carefully.”

The Telegraph has been told Ms Duffield was referring to a blog called the Whitstable Views, which on Sunday published an article entitled “Why Canterbury and Whitstable needs a new Labour MP”.

The article, written by an anonymous local Labour member, makes a number of allegations about Ms Duffield and her private life, including suggestions that she had recently moved 200 miles from the constituency to be with her partner in Wrexham..

Ms Duffield was unavailable to respond to requests for comment when approached on Sunday night. However, her partner is understood to have worked there previously on a documentary about Wrexham RFC, with Ms Duffield’s tweets indicating she rejected the claim she had moved away from her constituency permanently.

A Labour spokesman said: “The party continues to be in touch with Rosie Duffield and has offered her advice and support.”

After snubbing the Labour conference last year, Ms Duffield was urged by Tory whips to defect to the Conservatives. While she has insisted she has no intention of defecting, her latest comments are likely to reignite speculation that she could cross the Commons floor.
