Half of dog owners wouldn’t date someone their pet didn’t like, survey finds

Almost half of dog owners would not date someone that their pet did not like, a Kennel Club survey has found.

Some 45 per cent said if their four-legged friend didn’t like a prospective partner, then they would not carry on meeting them, according to the responses from 2,000 people.

A further two in five respondents said they would be more likely to go on a date with someone who had a dog.

For those who find dates online, one in ten admit choosing potential matches by looking at profile pictures and seeing if a dog is present.

The Kennel Club said the research, published ahead of Valentine’s Day, highlights the “unbreakable bond” that humans and dogs have shared for centuries.

It said this means it is not surprising that owners rely on their pet’s instincts when it comes to selecting a partner.

Owning a dog should ‘help in finding your soulmate’

Bill Lambert, a spokesperson for the organisation, said: “Clearly there are many benefits of dog ownership, from being an ice-breaker when meeting new people, to providing love and companionship, but of course it isn’t for everybody.

“It’s worth remembering the similarities to human relationships; a canine counterpart is also looking for long-term commitment, which comes with compromises and changes to your life. And there are 222 different dog breeds in the UK with varying needs and traits, as well as distinct, individual personalities, so finding ‘the one’ takes time.”

Two thirds of respondents said their dog is their best friend, nearly a quarter said they prefer their dog to their partner, and three in five admitted they would prefer staying in with their pet rather than going on a date.

A further three in five said they would not date someone who doesn’t like dogs.

The Kennel Club is the largest organisation in the UK devoted to dog health, welfare and training. Their survey was conducted in August last year.

The Kennel Club also said owning a dog should not be seen as an obstacle but a help in finding your soulmate.

Mr Lambert suggested that dog owners who find it hard to find a suitable date should socialise at events such as Crufts, where they are more likely to meet fellow dog lovers.
