Taste the Difference Coteaux du Giennois 2020, Loire, France
(13%, Sainsbury’s, £11, down to £10 until March 22)
From an appellation north of the more famous Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, a Loire sauv blanc that’s delicate and refreshing, quivering with fresh lemon and gooseberry with a grassy edge. A fine white to pour with the first of this year’s UK asparagus.
Extra Special Fiano Terre Siciliane 2020, Italy
(12.5%, Asda, £6)
Bargain alert! One of the best-priced whites on the high street right now, this Sicilian fiano (a grape local to southern Italy and Sicily) is wonderfully balanced between fresh, tangy citrus and juicier, riper nectarine and it has a soft note of almond on the finish. Just fine on its own, it’s moved into my fridge as a staple.
The Best Gruner Veltliner 2020, Niederosterreich, Austria
(12.5%, Morrisons, £8.50, down to £7.50 until March 16)
Austria’s gruner veltliner is invariably a good choice if you’re looking for a snappy, dry, zesty white; this one is packed with tangy grapefruit with a twist of white pepper. Try it with pan-fried white fish or scallops or salads with lemony dressings.
Surani Pietrariccia Fiano 2020/1, Puglia, Italy
(13%, Majestic, £9.99 or £7.49 as part of mixed six bottles until March 7)
Another fiano, this time from Puglia, the heel of Italy’s boot shape, and it’s relatively complex with a tangerine core, light tropical fruits like pineapple and a dab of honey, finishing dry. Lovely with a Spring vegetable risotto.
Croatica Grasevina 2020, Slavonia, Croatia
(12%, Tanners, £9.95 or £8.45 for six or more)
Here’s different – Croatian white made from grasevina (aka welsch riesling or Slovenia’s laski rizling) to an unusually high standard for this grape; there’s a slightly floral aroma of honeysuckle, and a fruit cocktail of apricot, quince and yellow pear. Ends dry; pair it with a light chicken dish and broad beans.
