An entire London suburb could be ‘cancelled’ as council decolonisers close in

The culture wars have seen statues removed and reputations “cancelled” – now entire areas are in the line of fire for their supposed historic connections.

The south London district of Tulse Hill, home to sprawling council estates, a popular park and the south circular road, could be at risk of losing its name, as it derives from a family who held manors in the area during the early 17th-century and had links to slavery.

The question is included in a “community listening exercise” instigated by Lambeth borough council, which has published a questionnaire for residents to ask their views on the names of certain localities.

Most of the survey deals with street names, but one section is devoted to Tulse Hill and explains that Sir Henry Tulse, who was lord mayor of London, was a 17th-century descendant of the earlier Tulse family after whom the area was named.

The council points out that Sir Henry derived “much of his wealth” from the slave trade.

Residents are asked whether the area should be renamed, whether it should have information displayed to explain its history or whether an education programme should be launched such as talks at local schools. A final option is to do nothing.

Lambeth is the latest London council to launch a review of its place names and comes after the capital’s mayor Sadiq Khan offered £25,000 grants to Londoners to “decolonise” their street names.

The council’s survey highlights a number of places streets which are named after Henry Richard Vassall-Fox, the third Baron Holland of Foxley and his wife Elizabeth Webster, both of whom owned slaves.

These streets – all of which could be renamed – include Vassal Road, Holland Grove, Foxley Road and Foxley Square and Lord Holland Lane. Also on the list is Lilford Road which is “associated through marriage to the Vassall family”.
