Ukraine afternoon briefing: Five developments as Liz Truss urges China not to back Russian invasion

Good evening. Britain’s Foreign Secretary has urged China not to support Vladimir Putin’s actions in Ukraine.

Liz Truss, on a visit to India today, also called for tougher sanctions on Russian banks, the closing of access to ports, and tackling the dependency on Russian energy.

“We need a timetable to end reliance on Russian oil and gas,” she said.

Elsewhere, Putin said that “unfriendly” countries, including all EU members, will need to set up rouble accounts to pay for gas deliveries from April.

1. Liz Truss says China must not support Russia in Ukraine

Speaking in Delhi, the Foreign Secretary said it was important that Beijing continued to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty.

“That is an important principle that as a member of the P5 and a responsible nation that China needs to stick to and therefore we shouldn’t see China supporting Russia’s actions in Ukraine,” she said.

She added: “I do think the strong response by Nato, the strong response by the G7 and our friends and allies around the world will make other aggressors think twice about carrying out invasions on sovereign nations.”

2. Putin says EU gas buyers need rouble accounts

Russian president Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that “unfriendly” countries, including all EU members, will need to set up rouble accounts to pay for gas deliveries from April.

“They must open rouble accounts in Russian banks. It is from these accounts that payments will be made for gas delivered starting tomorrow, April 1,” Putin said during a televised government meeting.
