Read the key developments from this afternoon below.

1. Russia strikes strategic port cities of Odesa and Mykolaiv

Russia struck the city of Odesa on Sunday in the first major attack on Ukraine’s strategic Black Sea port since the start of the invasion.

Igor Konashenkov, a Russian defence ministry spokesman, said missile strikes in the early hours had destroyed an oil refinery and three fuel storage facilities in or around the city. The targets were crucial for supplying the Ukrainian armed forces, he said.

No casualties were reported as powerful explosions rocked the city, sending plumes of black smoke over the city’s outskirts. Odesa is the main base for the Ukrainian navy that has so far been spared shelling or air strikes.

The city is close to the border with Moldova’s breakaway region of Transnistria, the area to which Russia has been seeking to build a land corridor.

Missile strikes were also reported in the nearby Mykolaiv region where no casualties were immediately reported.

Vitaly Kim, governor of the Mykolaiv region, said that the Russian missile strikes appear to have been deliberately indiscriminate.
