Boris Johnson vows to take on ‘politically motivated lawyers’ opposing Rwanda asylum seekers plan

Ministers have already introduced proposed laws to curb appeals by human rights lawyers, with “one-stop” shops for legal challenges to stop repeat claims.

However, Mr Johnson warned he was prepared to go further and said: “I promise that we will do whatever it takes to deliver this new approach initially within the limits of the existing legal and constitutional frameworks.” He added that he was “also prepared to explore any and all further legal reforms which may be necessary”.

Ms Patel pledged to face down the “naysayers” who “just sit on their hands and have been watching people die”, as well as the lawyers “fleecing the British taxpayer”. She added that a lot of Legal Aid money goes into “the merry-go-round of claim after claim after claim”.

After signing a memorandum of understanding with Rwanda on Thursday, she said it was “deeply unfair to the British public” for organisations to “effectively put blockages after blockages” in the way of reforming the UK’s “antiquated and broken” asylum system.

Sending migrants to Rwanda is one of a series of measures unveiled by Mr Johnson aimed at combating the record number of migrants crossing the Channel. The number of crossing has already passed 5,000 this year, more than double the rate of 2021 at the same point.

He also confirmed that the military will take charge of operations tackling the Channel migrants to ensure that “no boat makes it to the UK undetected”.

The immigration blueprint is an attempt by Mr Johnson to relaunch his premiership ahead of the local elections next month, after a public backlash over “partygate”.

Migrants who arrive on British shores but are deemed unsuitable to seek asylum in the UK will be served with a notice explaining that they will be relocated to Rwanda in five days.

They will be allowed to appeal against the decision, but if their claim is unsuccessful they will be detained and sent on a chartered flight to Kigali, the Rwandan capital, where their claim will be processed.

The first migrants are due to be flown out in the coming months and will receive formal notification that they will be relocated within weeks, according to the Home Office.
