The decision to exchange two British fighters who fought on the side of Ukraine and were captured by Russia will be decided by Kyiv.
Whether they will be exchanged for Putin’s godfather Viktor Medvedchuk also depends solely on Ukraine.
This was stated by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, reports TalkTV .
According to him, the British government is working closely with the Ukrainian authorities on the exchange of prisoners.
“We will do everything we can, but this is a decision for the Ukrainian side. We are working very closely on this,” Johnson said.
The British Prime Minister also recalled that his compatriots Sean Pinner and Aiden Aslin are, first of all, prisoners of war and the Geneva Convention applies to them.
“They are not hostages, they are not terrorists for exchange, they are prisoners of war. They have rights under the Geneva Convention, so they should not be put on camera – this is a violation of their rights,” Johnson said.
Recall that the British Sean Pinner and Aiden Aslin were captured by the Russian military. On Russian television, they asked to be exchanged for pro-Russian politician Viktor Medvedchuk.
In turn, the Minister for Northern Ireland Brandon Lewis said that the UK will not enter into negotiations with Russia on the exchange.
