What will Gran Turismo 7 be like?

On the night of February 3, Sony held another State of Play. The online event was dedicated to only one game – Gran Turismo 7. Here again they showed the gameplay, and also talked about the main innovations that fans of the series should expect.

The series producer and game designer Kazunori Yamauchi became the main character. If you pay attention to his words, it begins to seem that the main task of the game is to make car culture stronger. Almost everything in the game is aimed at this.

As in Gran Turismo Sport, the predecessor of the seventh game, the player will be told the history of the car brand with the most significant facts. Sometimes designers will show up to talk about a particular car.

Key figures:

  • Over 400 vehicles will be available at launch;
  • 34 tracks;
  • 90 variations of these tracks;
  • 650 aerodynamic parts;
  • 130 types of tires;
  • 1200 shades of paint;
  • Several thousand tuning parts that change both the appearance and the “stuffing” of the car;
  • 75 musicians and over 300 music tracks.

The cars themselves will be divided into three sections.

The first section is Brand Central. Here you can buy cars released for sale after 2001. This section has only undergone cosmetic improvements since the GT Sport. Most of the cars in this section were ported from the previous part, only slightly improving them:

The second section is used cars. Here most of the cars will be sold for a small cost. However, some cars, depending on their popularity, can greatly increase in price. At State of Play, they cited Japanese cars from the 1990s as an example, but we also noticed the legendary Lancia Stratos:

The third section is legendary cars. These are literally rarities that will only be available to wealthy collectors. It’s not very clear what time period will be covered in the game, but I noticed a 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer:

Licenses that did not exist in Gran Turismo Sport are returning to the game. In fact, this is the same as “driving school”, but with a more canonical name for the series. Here you will also have to go through separate sections of the tracks, improving your performance over and over again.

You can also improve the performance with the help of tuning. In the game, both internal settings are available, where you change car components such as filters, exhaust or brakes, and car appearance settings:

Oh, how I missed this in GT Sport! Spoilers, aerodynamic body kits – I really wanted Gran Turismo to finally get this improvement from the very first Need For Speed Underground.

By the way, now you can wash cars and change oil again in the game!

All settings affect the behavior of the car: changing tires, suspension and other parameters. Thanks to CFD modeling, it was possible to calculate the aerodynamics of cars and, accordingly, their behavior on the road:

Specialists, including racers, took part in the development of the game. Take Lewis Hamilton, for example.

PS5 players will especially appreciate the thrill of DualSense. Adaptive triggers allow you to get a lot more sensations than before. For example, you can feel the lock of the wheels during braking.

The game will also have dynamic weather. This means that on big circuits like the Nürburgring, the sun can shine brightly in one part, while it rains incessantly in the other. In this case, there will be wind that will affect both the clouds and where the rain will go.

The weather changes, while it behaves exactly the same as in real life. For example, if during the race the rain stops and the bright hot sun comes out, the road will begin to dry out, and the puddles will hold on to the last.

The sky map that the authors of Gran Turismo are so proud of will also be real. And the changes in the sky will be exactly the same as they are depending on the territory chosen. For example, the sky of California will be like in California, and not in conditional Sweden.

They have been talking about ray tracing in GT7 for a long time, but now it has become clear that at the very launch of the game this is the little that distinguishes the seventh part from Sport in graphic terms. There really aren’t many improvements here, so I guess the PS4 Pro game won’t look much better than GT Sport.

We improved the photo mode by adding HDR and image settings there:

As a result, you can make similar images, which, as the creators say, would not work in the real world:

You can also take frames straight from replays:

Added a new racing mode called “Music Rally”. Here the player must change the driving style depending on how the music plays:

Quite a strange thing and, to be honest, I don’t really understand why it is needed. Although, as colleagues say, many players turned off the music. Probably, the “musical rally” was invented specifically for such players.

Gran Turismo 7 will release on March 4th. The game will be available to owners of the PlayStation 5 and those who have a PlayStation 4.
