Church calendar for April 27 – Memorial Day of St. Martin, Confessor, Pope
On Wednesday, April 27, 2022, the church honors the memory of St. Martin, Confessor, Pope of Rome.
The future pope was born in the city of Toda (Umbria). He was a legal of Pope Theodore I in Constantinople and a well-known opponent of the Monothelite heresy. When Pope Theodore I died, Martin was elected to this position because of his devotion to the church. He immediately began his activities as the new Pope, without even waiting for approval from the Byzantine emperor Constans II.
In October 649, Pope Martin I convened a synod to finally condemn the lies of the Monothelites. This synod lasted almost a whole month, at which not only the heresy itself was condemned, but also its authors and the works they wrote.
However, these decisions were not implemented. On June 15, 653, by order of the emperor, Pope Martin I, as well as Maximus the Confessor, was captured. They took them to Rome. At first, Martin I was in exile on the island of Naxos, but was later taken to Constantinople. For a long time he endured inhuman treatment and humiliation, but on March 25, 655 he was sent into exile in Chersonese (Crimea), where he died.
