Gas distributors in Germany, Austria, Hungary and Slovakia plan to open ruble accounts with Gazprombank in Switzerland.
This decision was made in order to meet Russian requirements to pay for gas supplies in Russian currency.
This is reported by the Financial Times.
Among those who are going to pay according to the requirements of Russia, the two largest importers of Russian gas: the Dusseldorf company Uniper and the Vienna OMV.
OMV says it has analyzed Gazprom’s request for payment methods to comply with EU sanctions and is working on a solution that will meet the requirements of the imposed restrictions.
“We believe that the modified payment process is in line with sanctions laws, so such payments are possible,” said Uniper CFO Tiina Tuomela.
Earlier it became known that ten companies in the European Union opened ruble accounts with Gazprombank.
At the same time, it has recently become known that Gazprom has completely suspended gas supplies to Bulgarian and Polish operators due to non-payment in rubles.
At the same time, a Bloomberg source close to Gazprom said that, at least until the second half of May, the Kremlin will not turn off other countries that refuse Putin’s conditions. At this time, the following payments must be made, on which the future of gas supplies to Europe will actually depend.
The European Commission has warned EU members that buying Russian gas for rubles is a violation of sanctions.
It should be noted that at present Russia supplies gas through pipelines to 23 European countries.
