Concern for the privacy of its users has remained one of the paramount principles of Apple for many years. However, new software versions sometimes create new security holes. So, for example, it happened with iOS 15, which “by mistake” activated the “Improved Siri and Dictation” feature for those users who had previously disabled it in the settings. Apple spoke about this in a correspondence with ZDNet, noting that already in iOS 15.2 this setting was disabled for “many” users. However, “many” doesn’t mean “all”, which raises the question of why the company, aware of the situation, left its users in the dark by silently collecting samples of their voices.
Of course, now the Cupertinos have announced “the termination of the collection and removal of the collected audio recordings from all affected devices,” but they did not disclose the data on how many users were affected and when. In other words, the lack of transparency in such matters cannot but cast a shadow over the continued trust in the promoted privacy of apple device users.
