It’s not easy for OnePlus fans right now. They’ve been believing in fairy tales about the independent brand for so many years, proud of the OxygenOS firmware and the strategy of “one, ok two flagships per year”, that now they feel abandoned. OPPO now refers to OnePlus as nothing more than its sub-brand, the Nord budget line is growing by leaps and bounds, and the new flagship has been released in China on ColorOS. But maybe at least the product is good against this background? Well, let’s see.

Equipment and design
Meets the buyer of OnePlus 10 Pro is really cool. A huge red and black box made of high-quality rubberized cardboard is one of the most expensively made ones that I have seen in recent times. Inside – documentation, four branded stickers, a SIM needle, a high-quality protective case, a red USB cable and an 80.3-W charger (11 V, 7.3 A). Plus, a protective film is applied to the screen out of the box – a special thank you for this.
The complete case is definitely recommended for use. Not because it’s cool (although it’s really good) and not because the phone is somehow especially fragile – the metal frame is in place, on the Gorilla Glass Victus screen, Gorilla Glass is also on the back, so everything is like everyone else. But because the frosted glass back cover is one of the most unpleasant things I’ve ever felt. It is also some kind of rubberized to the touch, the usual feeling of silkiness for frosted glasses is not here and close. But it does not collect fingerprints, which is good.
Xiaomi 12 Pro – OnePlus 10 Pro
However, the camera module is responsible for collecting fingerprints. It is very large (which does not correspond to the real dimensions of the sensors at all, but more on that later) and outwardly resembles an electric stove. By the way, this knob is made of ceramics, as befits a modern electric stove. Instead of the fourth burner, there is a flash with a mysterious inscription P2D 50T, the meaning of which is not officially disclosed even by the manufacturer. It seems to me that this is just a mockery of competitors who write meaningless labels like ULTRA PREMIUM CAMERA on cameras. Well, like we can also in meaningless inscriptions, and what will you do to us? If I evaluate the design as a whole and subjectively, then I can’t say that I liked the look of the OnePlus 10 Pro. But, I must admit, the developers were able to make it memorable and recognizable, and this is also important.
At the ends, everything is standard – there is no 3.5 mm jack, no infrared port, volume buttons on the left. Fortunately, the proprietary mute switch has not yet been ditched – a very convenient thing that for some reason no other Android manufacturer inserts into smartphones. The tray for SIM-cards is double, it is not allowed to insert a memory card. There is a good vibration motor that did not receive proper software support – only a choice was offered between the traditional “buzzer” (“tenderness” mode) and an imitation of recoil from a button with or without reason (“crunch” mode). Before MIUI Haptics, where it is finely tuned which actions cause which vibration response, it’s like up to the moon. The in-display fingerprint scanner works well and, surprisingly, is at a comfortable height. BBK heard criticism?
The screen of the OnePlus 10 Pro is bombastic on paper: 6.7″ 10-bit LTPO 2 panel with a variable refresh rate of 1-120 Hz, touch up to 1000 Hz and a resolution of 3216×1440 pixels. And in many ways it lives up to expectations – the clarity is excellent, the colors are very accurate and nice, contrast and viewing angles are beyond praise.But there are also problems.The biggest of them is PWM, which is about 50% at brightness above half (and even higher below.) And yes, there is no DC Dimming option here.1000 Hz, of course , fake – even in compatible games, of which there are only two, I have not seen more than 280 Hz, but mostly it is 120 Hz in the interface and 240 Hz in games. , sometimes even 1 Hz, which leads to lag at the beginning of the scroll and other unpleasant effects.
Software
We have on the test the Chinese version of OnePlus 10 Pro (because at the time of writing the review no other exists), and it is based not on the OxygenOS familiar to fans of the brand, but on ColorOS. But this is not important – the modern OxygenOS mimics ColorOS as much as possible, and will soon retire altogether, so get used to it. In addition, the addiction is quite pleasant – ColorOS boasts rich functionality and a pleasant appearance. Personally, I have never been a fan of “oxygen”, but I like the “color” and I do not see any tragedy in changing the firmware. True, specifically on the OnePlus 10 Pro, I encountered smartphone freezes several times, which were treated only by reboot (4 cases in 8 days). It’s worrisome.
If you, like us, are going to order the Chinese version, you will be wondering how it is adapted to life in Russia. In general, there are a minimum of problems: there is a Russian language, Google Play is installed with an apk, there is certification. The only thing is that for some reason I don’t have Chrome installed. But nothing, Yandex.Browser is also not bad. Or anything else.

OnePlus 10 Pro received a triple main camera. The composition of the modules is as follows: a 48-megapixel main camera with a large sensor (1 / 1.43″, 1.12 microns) and OIS; a telephoto lens with a 3.3x zoom and a modest resolution of 8 megapixels plus OIS; a tiny 50-megapixel wide with 1 / 2.76″ sensor and a maximum viewing angle of 150 degrees in Fish Eye mode. Sounds like a good idea, but it’s embarrassing that this trio doesn’t develop in any way. The main camera remained the same as last year (and not far from OnePlus 8 Pro), the TV did not change from OnePlus 7 Pro, and the width was even better in the previous two generations – much larger and with autofocus. But for the first time in several years, there were no plugs, it’s great! Let’s take a look at the results:
If you judge “in a vacuum”, then the camera is good. You can find fault with the pictures only on trifles – the colors are sometimes oversaturated, dark objects are too dark, sometimes there is not enough dynamic range. Another problem (in my opinion, more serious): on OnePlus 10 Pro, in principle, it is impossible to shoot macro, there is neither a dedicated camera for this, nor autofocus in width (although the JN1 sensor contains a phase autofocus system, which OnePlus for some reason disabled), nor the ability to shoot close to the telephoto. This, of course, is not serious for a flagship smartphone in 2022. But most of the pictures, of course, are good. Separately, I would like to note the synchronization of the cameras: wide, main camera and telephoto are filmed with almost the same color temperature. The dedicated night mode is also good, especially in combination with wide and telephoto – I liked the pictures taken in AUTO more on the main camera.
Fish-eye – wide – base – telephoto – 11x hybrid zoom
Fish-eye mode in width is a cool topic. Why take round photographs, I did not understand, but I liked the usual pictures with a very large capture angle.
But the OnePlus 10 Pro’s video camera is a disappointment, especially when compared to the previous generation’s luxurious video capabilities. 8K video can only be recorded at 24 fps and – attention – without autofocus, only with manual focus by touch. OnePlus really promotes shooting at 2160p @ 120fps, forgetting to clarify that the built-in video player works at 60 Hz, and you, in fact, have nowhere to watch the footage. Well, at least autofocus works in this mode (which, by the way, is generally strange, given the much higher bitrate in 4K@120fps). Shirik was taught to shoot at 2160p@60fps, it connects only at 30 fps, and the telephoto only works at 1080p and below (but there’s nothing to be done – it’s impossible to shoot 4K video on an 8-megapixel sensor). If you can shoot in the mode you need, then the result will not upset you, but there are too many restrictions.
The 32 MP front camera is good. Sharing selfies made with her help is not a shame. Well, or ashamed, but not because of their quality, and OnePlus has nothing to do with it.
Performance and Benchmarks
The OnePlus 10 Pro is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. Judging by the benchmarks, the company implemented it better than Xiaomi in 12, and in terms of GPU, even better than Motorola in Edge X30. And much better. (We have not yet met other 8 Gen 1 smartphones at the time of writing this text.) Traditionally, the fastest memory is UFS 3.1 and LPDDR5. Stereo, albeit one and a half, good vibration feedback, 120 Hz with 240 Hz we touch in games, a lot of gaming chips such as prioritizing the rendering of different elements of the scene … An excellent game phone?
Not so simple. In the video review, Eugene noted oddities during the game – even when the fps counter showed pretty good values, such as 45-50 frames per second, it seemed to him that it was actually less. And it didn’t seem like it! It’s all about auto-hertz – at the slightest heat, the display starts working at 30 Hz, even in those games that support 120 Hz. Curiously, the fps counters continue to write 45-50 fps at low hertz; Apparently, OnePlus somehow broke the vertical sync.
If you stop writing incomprehensible words, then this is what happens: as a compensation for heating, OnePlus 10 Pro not only reduces the processor power (it does this with extreme restraint, which we can see in benchmarks), but also radically cuts the screen refresh rate – up to 30 Hz . As a result, even when the chipset is ready to thrash at full speed and give out high fps, you will not see this and will play as if at 30 fps. Moreover, the screen “throttles” with a very low temperature threshold, and you can encounter this problem even in fairly simple games. Why OnePlus did this is not clear, I want to believe that they will refuse this with updates.
The battery capacity is 5000 mAh. This is a lot, but given the top-end hardware and the 120Hz Quad HD + screen, it would be bad without it. Under load and with QHD and 120 Hz turned on, the phone can be discharged in just 3-4 hours of the screen (Shadowgun Legends, max. brightness and QHD discharged the smartphone by 24% in an hour). But if you set more gentle settings (I spent most of the time with 120 Hz, but 1080p and auto brightness), then you can safely count on much more. For example, I got a little more than 6 hours of screen time in two days – the load was mainly video calls (Skype / Google Meet), instant messengers and browsing. I think this is a good result. I note that when watching a video from YouTube, the smartphone almost does not discharge (9% in two hours), that is, the energy efficiency of the display is on top here.
The battery is dual-cell (2 x 2500 mAh), which supports dual-wire charging at 80 watts. This allows, without harm to the battery, almost no decrease in the charge rate until the very end, and as a result, it takes only 32 minutes to fully charge the battery. For 5000 mAh, this is very fast. In 15 minutes, the smartphone is charged by 60%. There is also fast wireless charging (50 W), but we could not measure its speed – the only charger that was at hand had a power of only 5 W. Reverse wireless charging is supported, but OnePlus prefers not to disclose its power. Most likely, the numbers are quite ridiculous.
findings
Before drawing conclusions, I would like to casually compare the smartphone with its predecessor. And better – the predecessor, that is, OnePlus 8 Pro. What has changed since then? The screen has become a little smaller and a little more elongated, but it does not matter. They brought auto-hertz, but from it there are continuous problems. Shirik got worse: he lost autofocus and became 1.9 times smaller, plus the “X-ray” color filter camera disappeared (although in 8 Pro it was “killed” with updates). The battery has increased, charging accelerated steeply (from 30 to 80 watts). Hardware has become more powerful, but it’s hard to evaluate – two years later, the Snapdragon 865 is still “taking out” any tasks. Well, like, everything. For two years, they replaced the shirik with a battery, dispersed the charging and brought a buggy chip into the screen. Cool.
If the previous OnePlus Pro were practically the ultimate flagships, losing to competitors only in small things, then the “top ten” took an impressive step back, and many competitors will look advantageous against its background. And do not say that it is OPPO’s fault. The OnePlus 10 Pro’s shoals are clearly not created by the team that made the luxurious Find X3 Pro, the experimental Find N, or the extremely balanced mid-range Reno series. And, judging by the sound switch, this device was developed by the OnePlus team after all (on the Nords, “blindly” converted from OPPO, it is not). So do not shift from a sick head to a healthy one.
