“Death on the Nile” is an adaptation of the famous novel by Agatha Christie. The production was handled by Kenneth Branagh, who also played the legendary Hercule Poirot (Branagh returned to the role of a detective after the release of Murder on the Orient Express in 2017).

The plot of the film takes place in London, where Poirot witnesses the birth of a romantic relationship. A few weeks later, Hercule joins the ranks of guests invited to a lavish wedding celebration in Egypt. Lynette (Gal Gadot) is a charming and obscenely rich bride. She marries the love of her life, Simon Doyle (Armie Hammer). The lovers rent a luxury cruise ship that will cruise the waters of the Nile, approaching the ancient pyramids. Champagne is pouring on board, laughter and music are heard. But the fun turns to tragedy when the company finds a dead body with a gunshot mark.

Where there is great wealth, there is envy, intrigue and deceit. Everyone who was part of the celebration has ulterior motives for the crime. You can’t hide it from anyone, but from Hercule Poirot. The detective is obsessed with order, so he pays attention to details that escape the eyes of other passengers. By the way, among them is Poirot’s old friend, Monsieur Bouc, played by actor Tom Bateman (we’ve already seen him in Murder on the Orient Express).

The film adaptation follows the original plot of the work of Agatha Christie, but there are several additions to the script. So, the newlyweds invite the popular blues singer Salome Otterborn (played by Sophie Okonedo) to the celebration – thanks to her, musical numbers appear in the film that create the atmosphere of the 1930s.

The ribbon captures the most opulent and elegant details of the time, adding a glossy sheen to them. Heroes change spectacular outfits, walk past beautiful cabins and disembark to explore the sights. The first half of the film is devoid of criminal incidents – we are given the opportunity to properly enjoy the surroundings and take a closer look at the characters, whose dialogues boil down to discussions about love (almost every character utters a pathos remark on this topic).

It is noticeable that the multi-colored sunsets, pyramids and other locations in Egypt were created using computer graphics. The picture is very rich and varied, albeit a little artificial.

Kenneth Branagh wants his film adaptation to be remembered for something other than the murder investigation and visuals. Therefore, he adds the backstory of Hercule Poirot to the film, putting forward his version of why the detective began to wear a mustache. Branagh tries to make Poirot a more lively person and a little clumsily reveals the hero from the emotional side.

Recall that most recently, Kenneth Branagh was nominated for “Oscar-2022” . The film academy honored another work of the director – the film “Belfast” (Belfast) , which tells the story of a Northern Irish family during the riots in the 1960s. As for the adaptation of the novel by Agatha Christie, this is a movie that looks with great pleasure, but it does not deserve any awards.

It is worth rejoicing that the tape “Death on the Nile” hit the big rental, and was not sent “on the shelf.” After Armie Hammer was accused of sexual assault, the premiere of the picture was postponed. Disney even considered reshooting scenes with the actor (in the action movie Army of the Dead , they got out of a similar situation by replacing a troubled artist – Chris D’Elia does not appear in the final version of the film, Tig Notaro takes his place). But a big budget was already spent on the production of the detective, so the company left everything as it is.

Pros: Spectacular staging of a detective novel; the glossy atmosphere of the 1930s; a new character, thanks to which the music appears in the film; Hercule Poirot once again brilliantly investigates the murder

Cons: pretentious remarks about love; Kenneth Branagh is trying very hard to expand the detective’s personal history

Conclusion: a beautiful film adaptation of the novel with landscapes created using computer graphics. Thanks to the elegant details, the film looks like a pleasure.
