Equipment
The electric tongs come in a small, rather nicely designed box. A careful study of its sides allows you to get acquainted with the appearance of the device, its features and main characteristics. Inside the package is the device itself, removable casings and an instruction manual. The styler and removable covers are packaged in bubble wrap to protect them from scratches and minor damage during storage and transport.
At first sight
Externally, the styler looks very decent and even elegant. The body of the device is made of black plastic. At first glance, the tongs are quite light. Their design is very simple: a plastic handle with control buttons and indicators and two heated work plates, one of which, with a clamp, can be folded back by about 35°-40°.
The handle does not slip in the hands, it is convenient to hold the device. In the working position, the clamp falls exactly under the index finger, so that the panels open without effort. On the handle on the side of the clamp, there are power and adjustment buttons, as well as indicators of temperature conditions.
On the opposite side of the handle is a label with technical information about the product. The place where the power cord is attached to the case is protected by a five-centimeter plastic casing, which protects the cord from bending. The casing rotates freely on a full circle. The length of the cord seems to us sufficient for the operation of the device under normal conditions. The casing is equipped with a hanging loop, which, of course, facilitates storage of the device.
The width of the working panels is 2.5 cm, the length is 11.5 cm, which will allow you to effectively style thick hair. The ceramic coating of the heating surface is smooth, gives the impression of high quality and durability. The tips of the panels are thermally insulated, which will allow you to wrap strands around hot tongs or hold the panels while pulling hair without the risk of burns.
The device is supplied with two plastic casings. They are designed to provide safety when straightening hair. The protective part is put on the operating panel in an intuitive way – you need to insert the thermally insulated tip into the recess of the casing and fix the accessory in the base of the panel until it clicks.
The Redmond RCI-2333 hair styler made quite a good impression: we rated the workmanship as decent, the operation of the tongs, at first glance, should be convenient and safe.
Instruction
The format of the brochure is rhythmically in tune with the shape of the device itself – the document is narrow and long – a funny decision. Unusual form does not affect the process of perception of information. Information is presented in three languages – Russian, Ukrainian and Kazakh.
The content is standard: familiarity with the design of the device, a list of safety measures, technical specifications, rules and recommendations for operating the device. If the user decides to read the instructions, then even a scrupulous study of the document is unlikely to take more than 3-5 minutes.
Control
After connecting the electric tongs to electricity, you need to press the power button. Then, using the “+” and “-” buttons, set the desired heating level. The manufacturer recommends choosing a mode depending on the type of hair:
- 160 ° C – dyed, thin hair;
- 180 ° C – normal hair type, curly hair;
- 200 ° C – coarse, unruly hair.
When selected, the indicator next to the corresponding digit is highlighted in white. When heating, the indicator flashes, when the panels reach the set temperature, it burns steadily. By default, the minimum temperature is set. After finishing work, press the power button and disconnect the device from the network.
Management was expected to be intuitive. The main thing is that even if the user forgot to turn off the device from electricity at the end of work, the curling iron itself will turn off the heat after 30 minutes from the moment it was turned on. Extremely comfortable.
Exploitation
No special actions are required before starting operation: you need to unpack the device, unwind the power cord and wipe the case with a damp soft cloth.
There were no odors or smoke when first turned on. The styler heats up to the maximum temperature quickly – the indicator stops flashing after 55 seconds.
If the device is used as a rectifier, then it is recommended to put on plastic casings on the working panels. If the styler is used as a curling iron, then the panels are not needed.
The processes of curling or straightening are quite simple. For curling, you need to grab and hold the end of a strand 3-5 cm wide between heated panels. Then you need to wind the strand, holding the device on the handle and insulated ends, wait 3-8 seconds, unwind the strand and release the hair by pressing the lever. To straighten your hair, grab a strand about five centimeters wide near the hairline and slowly stretch it between the heated panels.
The lever does its job perfectly – the hair is clamped securely and does not slip out even when pulling the strand. The fitting is fast. If the curls after curling are treated with a fixative, for example, varnish, then they hold well. We were especially pleased with the ability to adjust the level of heating – if you can save your hair from unnecessary damage, this opportunity should be used.
The styler should only be used on clean, dry, well combed hair. Do not comb your hair immediately after styling, you need to let it cool.
The length of the cord was sufficient. Since the hinge rotates freely, the cord does not interfere with work and does not get tangled around the hands. The weight of the device is extremely comfortable – the hand does not get tired at all while styling the hair. However, we suspect that this factor is highly dependent on the thickness and length of the hair.
Care
The instruction recommends wiping the body of the device with a damp soft cloth. Before doing this, you need to make sure that the tongs are disconnected from the mains and have completely cooled down. The device must not be immersed in water or cleaned with chemically aggressive or abrasive agents.
Our measurements
The device heats up to the minimum temperature in 50 seconds, to the maximum – in 55. The power can initially reach 350 W, then gradually, in 20-30 seconds, it drops to 120-100. For 10 minutes of operation at maximum heating, the electric tongs consumed 0.010 kWh. For 30 minutes of work – 0.023 kWh. Automatic shutdown worked exactly after 30 minutes of operation.
Three minutes after reaching the set heating level, the temperature of the panels is:
- 160°C mode: 132-148°C;
- 180°C mode: 148-172°C;
- in 200 °C mode: 160 to 190 °C.
Over the entire area of the working surface, the temperature is approximately the same – the indicators do not decrease closer to the base or to the tips. We also measured the surface temperature of the protective covers. In some places, their surface heated up to 85 °C, on average it reached 50-65 °C.
practice tests
In testing, we straightened and twisted the tips inward on medium-length hair. It is convenient to interact with the device, we have never touched our hands or scalp with hot panels, despite the fact that we were not extremely careful. On medium length hair, the styling process does not last very long. Hair glides freely, does not get stuck and does not touch any parts of the styler. The clamp holds the strand firmly enough. The tips don’t get hot at all, so it’s easy and safe to wrap your hair around the worktops.
findings
According to the results of testing, the Redmond RCI-2333 styler proved to be a device that successfully copes with two declared functions – hair straightening and creating curls. The device looks nice, neatly made and assembled, easy to use. The plates have a ceramic coating, their surface is smooth, so that the hair slides freely over the plates. According to the results of measurements, the heating of working surfaces was recognized as uniform. The advantages include the ability to select the temperature regime for hair treatment and the function of automatic shutdown after 30 minutes of operation.
Only one feature can be written down as cons: the surface of the protective covers heats up. Not to such, of course, temperatures as working panels, but still, when working with the device, you need to observe certain accuracy.
