Test drive of the SKODA Enyaq iV electric car: a hot novelty in a cold winter

Test drive of the SKODA Enyaq iV electric car: a hot novelty in a cold winter

Being the first is difficult, but prestigious. In the biography of SKODA Enyaq iV, the word “first” occurs many times. Does this guarantee the success of the electric novelty? And if the acquaintance had a more difficult winter time with severe frosts? Eh-h-h, it was not easy for the SKODA Enyaq iV electric car! But the more interesting and fuller the observations came out – which I hasten to share.

Message from the editor: Our defenders from the 115th brigade, which is now fighting in the east, need a pickup truck . Details for transferring funds to a monobank card – Polyanskaya Karine Sergeevna, card number 5375414101372265. We ask you to take part in the fundraising.
Glory to Ukraine!

Crossover? Or wagon?

This is one of the most difficult questions for the SKODA Enyaq iV. The first official photos show us only “another crossover” a little larger than the SKODA Karoq. But in reality, everything turns out to be completely different – the SKODA Enyaq iV electric car stands out for its original proportions and body dimensions: lower than the traditional crossover and higher than the usual “passenger car”, elongated in length like a classic station wagon, but with a short and sloping hood in the style of a minivan.

At the same time – and after all, he is rather big! The first SKODA electric car on the MEB platform can be compared not with the SKODA Karoq, but rather with the older SKODA Kodiaq crossover. The total length of the SKODA Enyaq iV electric car reaches 4.65 meters, the wheelbase is almost 2.77 meters. At the same time, the height of the body (1.62 meters) is only slightly more than a traditional passenger car. But the width of 1.88 meters is again almost comparable to the Kodiaq model. And the incredibly small number of decorative details is also surprising: literally nothing catches the eye. However, every detail, if already done, is done well: pay attention to the headlights and lanterns, reminiscent of faceted crystal, beautiful rims, a wide radiator grille (okay, imitation …) with a chrome trim.

In the case of the ŠKODA Enyaq iV electric car , it is not so much the details that are surprising, but the unexpectedly large dimensions and overall proportions of the body. The test electric car received 20-inch wheels, but in general, 18-21-inch wheels are put on the SKODA Enyaq iV model. And in general, different versions of the electric car may differ in bumpers and a false grille: there is an option even with LED backlighting. But most of all, the electric car is remembered for its general shape – a cross between a crossover and a station wagon.

Perhaps it is the proportions of the body that set the passenger landing in the cabin. Unlike a crossover with a vertical high landing, here you sit “along”: stretched out, as if in a car. At the same time, a slightly increased height made it possible to easily make a multi-layered floor, inside of which the battery is hidden. I’ll tell you about the design later, but for now I’m stating the very fact of a comfortable fit – I admit, SKODA’s ergonomics experts clearly guessed it: an excellent supply of space in the legs, almost no constraint for the feet, good visibility, everything is at hand and before your eyes.

What exactly? Before your eyes – a small 5.3-inch display with a minimum amount of information. In the center – speed and power reserve. On the left – hints of auxiliary systems (“cruise”, row control, speed limit). On the right – instructions from the navigator and the choice of direction of movement. It seems that everything was done to please a data projection system with support for augmented reality (a first for SKODA) and a large central touch screen with a diagonal of 10 or even 13 inches: again a first for SKODA, although the general menu of the multimedia system resembles that of the SKODA Octavia .

Similar to the exterior, the layout of the front end is not shocking, but intelligently surprises with originality: a soft line with LED lighting emphasizes the overall width of the panel, and a 2-story center console combines a convenient joystick with “RND / B” positions and a roomy lower recess. Plus luxurious brown leather (made with olive oil, by the way) that will make any premium car an honor! There are other options: for example, eco-upholstery made from fabric obtained from the processing of plastic bottles.

The whole essence of the interior of the SKODA Enyaq iV electric car is how it combines traditional solutions (soft seats with luxurious leather, physical buttons on the center console) with original and unusual solutions: a large touch screen, 2-story center console. Moreover, each element is not only beautiful, but also functional – for example, contour lighting changes its color depending on the selected driving mode and signals an open door (as in SEAT Leon FR ). There is a lot of space in the back, a comfortable “passenger” fit, phenomenal attention to detail: a pocket for a smartphone, ventilation and its own “climate” zone, an armrest with cup holders. The trunk is only at the back, but it is large (585 liters) and well thought out: an underground niche, additional lighting on the folding door, a branded scraper with a magnifying glass.

The first MEB electric car from ŠKODA: five versions and excellent aerodynamics

I specifically clarify that SKODA Enyaq iV is the first electric car from SKODA, built on the MEB platform, which was previously met on the example of Volkswagen ID.3 . After all, if we talk about electric cars in general, then we can recall the electric version of the SKODA Citygo, created on the basis of a compact passenger car. But if we talk about creating an electric car from the very beginning, without analogues with internal combustion engines, on a special platform, and even a crossover, then SKODA Enyaq iV is the first.

Moreover, this “crossover” is determined not only by a clearance of 186 mm, but also by the presence of modifications with all-wheel drive. Today, the range of the model consists of five versions: rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, three different batteries, different power and range, even charging options differ. The ŠKODA Enyaq iV test electric vehicle was presented in version “60”: a battery with a nominal capacity of 62 kWh (actually 58 kWh is used), rear-wheel drive and an electric motor with a capacity of 132 kW or 180 hp. (310 Nm), power reserve of about 400 km (WLTP), maximum 160 km/h, acceleration 0-100 km/h in 8.7 seconds.

Below it is a version with the index “50”: a 109 kW electric motor (148 hp) and a 55 kWh battery (52 kWh is used). And above it are versions with indices “80” and “80x”: in this case, an 82 kWh battery is installed (77 kWh is used), and the drive can be rear or full. For example, the “80s” version gets two electric motors with a total power of 195 kW (265 hp) and a torque of 425 Nm. Finally, at the top of the model range is the SKODA Enyaq iV vRS electric car: 82 kWh battery, two electric motors of 225 kW (306 hp) and 460 Nm, acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 6.2 seconds, a maximum of 180 km/h h.

Briefly about the main thing: the number of motors and power, battery and power reserve. Interestingly, depending on the version of the electric car, even the charging power changes (Type 2 Mennekes and CCS 2, up to a maximum of 125 kW). The SKODA Enyaq iV crossover has become the brand’s first electric vehicle built on the MEB platform. And yet – at the time of its launch, it was the first electric car on the MEB platform, the production of which “left” outside of Germany: the SKODA Enyaq iV model is assembled at a factory in the city of Mladá Boleslav. The MEB platform must go global for the production of electric vehicles – and this is already happening.

In addition to general information, there are also a lot of interesting nuances. Firstly, well-designed aerodynamics: a front bumper with side air outlets, streamlined rims, a flat bottom, a rear spoiler. All this made it possible to achieve a minimum aerodynamic coefficient of 0.257. Secondly, the electric car is distinguished by a wide range of driver assistance systems, plus matrix LED headlights, a data projection system on the windshield, and an almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution between the axles. In a word, now SKODA Enyaq iV looks like a kind of “techno” flagship of the brand.

Finally, thirdly: we say “SKODA” – we mean “Simply Clever”. In addition to the aforementioned scraper in the trunk, there are also a lot of shelves and niches in the cabin, two compartments for a smartphone on the center console (of course, not without induction charging), an umbrella in the door and much more.

Much more than just another MEB electric car: the ŠKODA Enyaq iV crossover is a true showcase for the brand, offering maximum innovation combined with the brand’s Simply Clever approach .

On the move: good comfort and recuperation, but range issues

The SKODA Enyaq iV electric car is good for comfort in the broadest sense of the word. There is a successful suspension setup (quite soft, but without excessive buildup), and poor perception of separately located deep pits (“thanks” to large wheels with wide tires), and good sound insulation. Plus, mental comfort: the cross-format itself with increased ground clearance allows you to feel more free, for example, on the old streets of Podil. What to say about overclocking? Typical for electric vehicles, acceleration control is as straightforward as possible, smooth, proportional to the pressure on the accelerator pedal. Although acceleration itself does not strike the imagination (measurement below) – largely due to the almost 2-ton weight of the electric car: a considerable 1965 kg are recorded in the data sheet.

But what is most surprising is not acceleration or comfort, but two other parameters. First, agility. The steering wheel of the SKODA Enyaq iV electric car makes 3.5 turns from lock to lock. But, as it turned out, not just like that. The fact is that the MEB platform allows you to implement a fairly large eversion of the wheels – as a result, the turning circle of a large electric vehicle is only 9.3 meters. If you get used to the size, then the SKODA Enyaq iV is easy to handle, easy and convenient when parking or on city streets.

The second point is recovery management. For an electric car, the recuperation function is always extremely important: it allows you to collect part of the energy and drive additional distance. The SKODA Enyaq iV electric car offers recuperation control using the “B” position of the selector or paddle shifters: a maximum of three steps and a deceleration of 1.5 m / s 2 are, so to speak, already generally accepted rules. But besides this, the SKODA Enyaq iV crossover offers an automatic recuperation control mode. The electric car seems to “see” the situation in front of it: is there a car in front or not, at what speed does it go, accelerates or slows down. And based on these data, he makes a decision about work – to coast or slow down smoothly. All this time, the recovery function is activated. Thus, the SKODA Enyaq iV electric car independently and constantly monitors the situation, selects the most favorable mode of deceleration and energy collection: I got a maximum of +2 km for one long descent.

Always the main question for an electric car is the question of power reserve. The maximum that I saw was 283 km (“eco” mode, 100% battery charge, temperature + 2-5 degrees Celsius). It seems to be true: energy consumption of about 19 kWh per 100 km with an actually used battery capacity of 58 kWh just gives about 300 km of range in the city. It is interesting that on the highway at a speed of 90-100 km / h, an electric car consumes an approximately comparable amount of energy: 18-20 kWh per 100 km of run. And now the nuances: turning on the interior heating at full power immediately affects energy consumption (plus 1.5-2 kW per hour) and takes 20-30 km of power reserve. And if it was 10-15 degrees below zero outside, then you should have counted on only 200 km of real mileage. It seems that the promised “about 400 km” range can only be achieved in the off-season, without turning on the heating / air conditioning, on summer tires, and with the smoothest driving style. But acceleration from 0-100 km / h is obtained without any reservations: with the declared 8.7 seconds, in reality it comes out 8.5-8.6 seconds.

An electric car that does not shock, but attracts

At the moment, there is no list of configurations for Ukraine yet, there is no date for the start of sales, there are not even indicative prices. For example, you can look at the German market: there the SKODA Enyaq iV electric car starts at almost 35,000 euros for version “50” (for comparison, in Germany, the SKODA Kodiaq crossover starts at 32,000 euros). But these are only rough guidelines. Therefore, I cannot gather the big picture and prepare a standard full-length review – there is a lack of understanding of the market and competitors around the product. The result was a kind of “first look”, the first acquaintance with an electric car. But long enough and diverse enough to get to know the SKODA Enyaq iV model from all sides.

Suddenly, but I caught myself thinking that I had already met something similar from the “Czechs” – like SKODA Kamiq , the SKODA Enyaq iV electric car constantly tried to give more than you expect: starting from an unformatted body type, continuing with a comfortable and cozy interior, ending with decent driving characteristics . The main thing is that the electric car creates a feeling of thoughtful and solid things. As a result – without shocking any details in particular, the SKODA Enyaq iV electric car suddenly turns out to be very pleasant as a whole.
