Today we are testing the Redmond RJ-930S auger juicer. The device is distinguished by a small diameter of the loading opening (only 3.5 × 4.5 cm), modest dimensions, as well as the presence of a reverse function, leakage protection and a cold pressing system that preserves the maximum benefit in the squeezed juice.

As always, we have a series of mandatory practice tests during which we will find out how successfully the device copes with its tasks, and find out where it will place in our ranking of auger juicers.

Equipment

The juicer came to us in a medium-sized rectangular box with a plastic handle on top. The image of the juicer is supplemented with a photo of a beautiful lady and useful information about the device: model name, technical characteristics, code with a link to the application with recipes for this model, as well as the advantages of the device are listed and illustrated on the side faces.

Opening the box, inside we found:

Each part of the juicer is packed in a plastic bag, and also placed in foam inserts.

At first sight

After assembling the juicer, we found out that the dimensions of the device can really be called compact, because the height of the device from the legs to the edge of the loading neck is only 39 centimeters, and the height of the motor block turned out to be 17 cm. Such a device can be easily installed in a standard kitchen under a hanging kitchen cabinet. Moreover: such a baby will stand anywhere, the main thing is that there is an outlet a meter away and it is possible to install two containers next to the spouts.

Despite its compact size, the instrument looks solid and inspires confidence with its very heavy motor unit (2.5 kg) and molded parts. And thanks to tenacious rubber legs-suction cups, it holds firmly on the work surface.

On top of the motor block there is a mount for a plastic bowl, with a grater and an auger installed in it.

The bowl is made of black transparent plastic and has two spouts: one for the juice outlet, the other for the pulp.

The juice outlet has a rubberized plastic valve with a small handle. It stops the flow of juice, so you can mix the juice from different ingredients directly in the bowl, and also avoid falling drops when changing the juice container.

The hole for the cake is a little wider. Inside the bowl, it closes with a rubber tongue.

Also in the middle of the bowl is a cone-shaped elevation with a rubber ring on top. It is in this place that the auger, installed together with the grater inside the bowl, will dock with the rotating shaft of the motor block.

The auger is made of impact-resistant plastic, and the filter grater is made of stainless steel and plastic.

The grater looks like a classic for a centrifugal juicer – a round mesh funnel, inside of which an auger is inserted.

At the base of the auger is a mount that connects it to the motor unit.

The filler cap is plastic, as is the small pusher.

The mouth looks very narrow and it is obvious that all the products will have to be cut into small pieces so that they can successfully move towards the auger.

The juicer bowl has a black plastic handle that holds the mechanism for connecting the three parts of the juicer. The whole system only clicks into place when the bowl is correctly installed on the motor unit and the lid with the filler neck is correctly secured from above. The instrument will not start up if not properly assembled.

Glasses for juice and cake are made of transparent matte plastic and have a graduation with marks of 200, 400 and 600 ml. They are not attached to the body in any way and can be freely rearranged.

At the bottom of the motor block, we see 4 rubber suction cups at the ends of the legs, as well as several ventilation holes and two rectangular nameplates with brief technical information and the production date of the juicer. From the back of the device there is an outlet for the electrical wire.

The set also comes with a convenient narrow black plastic brush with hard bristles. It will help to deal with stuck fragments of fruits and vegetables in hard-to-reach places in the juicer and especially in the grater.

Instruction

The user manual in several languages is placed in a small booklet on 21 pages, of which 11 pages are detailed instructions in Russian. Here you can find all the necessary information about the device, its operation, how to care for it, and safety measures.

The manufacturer also provided promotional brochures with draws of various devices of its brand and a glossy book with recipes for various juices of almost 100 pages.

Control

The Redmond RJ-930S juicer is controlled by a mechanical switch. When switching up, the normal operation of the device is turned on in the “I” mode, down, in the “II” mode – the reverse rotation of the engine.

The control process is very simple and intuitive. To stop the appliance, the switch must be returned to the initial position “O”.

Protection against incorrect assembly is also provided here: if some parts are installed incorrectly, the device will not start its work.

Exploitation

Before first use, the manufacturer recommends that all detachable parts be rinsed with warm water, if necessary using a mild detergent, and dried thoroughly before reassembly. The filter grater and motor unit can be wiped with a damp and then dry cloth.

The device has a really narrow mouth, so we cut all the ingredients for making juice into small pieces in advance. It took a little longer than usual, but we were very satisfied with the result of the device.

Glasses for juice and cake are exactly the same in design and volume. During the operation of the device, we found out that when squeezing juice from 1 kg of products and above, the container for the cake becomes useless, since it cannot contain all the waste. Therefore, we began to use improvised containers for cake, and both glasses were used for juice. In the Granny Smith apple test, we just needed both glasses, since all the juice did not fit in one container.

The noise during operation of this juicer is low, which can be of great importance when choosing a device. During tests, the RJ-930S proved to be a very nimble representative of auger juicers: it extracts juice from food quickly enough, and if you give it a rest every 20 minutes, then this model can be an excellent option even for a large family or for use in the country.

Care

The juicer must not be left dirty for a long time. Ideally, wash all soiled parts in warm water and clean the filter and auger with a brush immediately after each use. It will be easier to clean the filter if you pre-soak it in warm water with a small amount of detergent for 10-15 minutes.

Unfortunately, the manufacturer did not indicate anything about the possibility of washing the parts of the device in the dishwasher.

Our measurements

Idle power consumption was 0.3W. The power consumed by the device depends on the rigidity of the processed raw materials and the speed of operation. On average, it did not exceed 150 watts. The maximum juicer showed when squeezing juice from carrots: 302 watts.

The sound level meter readings during the tests were:

• up to 75 dBA when grinding solid ingredients (cabbage, apples, carrots)
• 60-63 dBA when grinding soft grapefruit, oranges

practice tests

The juicer testing methodology, developed by iXBT.com experts, provides for a number of mandatory tests. We press exactly one kilogram of a certain type of raw material: Granny Smith apples, pink grapefruits, white cabbage and carrots. Thus, we derive the performance factor – the average weight of juice from a kilogram of product and the average processing time for the specified weight.

Required Test #1: Carrots

We prepared a kilo of carrots and cut them into small pieces.

RJ-930S easily coped with this task and in 4 minutes 15 seconds all root crops were deftly divided into pulp and juice.

We got a bright orange homogeneous juice with a minimum amount of delicate light foam.

The cake turned out to be homogeneous, small, rather dry.

We were very pleased with the work of the juicer – it turned out to be powerful, fast and not very loud. When working with it, all surfaces remain clean, and the juice and cake smoothly diverge into the desired compartments.

Result: 417 g of juice in 4 minutes 15 seconds

Mandatory test number 2: white cabbage

For the second test, we also finely chopped and measured a kilogram of white cabbage.

The cabbage shredded easily. The extraction was not very fast, especially due to the fact that small pieces had to be loaded one by one and longer than usual, but we got an excellent quality sweetish cabbage juice with a lot of airy foam.

The waste container also pleased us. The cake looked uniform, no unprocessed pieces or whole cabbage leaves.

The only thing that confused us a little was the waste stuck between the grater and the auger, which was not completely wrung out, which means we were deprived of some of the juice. The weight of the unprocessed pieces was 45 g.

Result: 373 g of juice in 5 minutes 30 seconds

Required Test #3: Granny Smith Apples

We cut the Granny Smith apples into small pieces, removed the core from them and weighed exactly 1 kilogram.

In the process of pressing, we quickly got an excellent result – fragrant green juice with a large amount of thick, gradually settling foam.

The cake again turned out to be dry and uniform.

The amount of juice in this test came out to the maximum, we could not even drink it together at a time and poured it into a bottle for storage.

Result: 782 g of juice in 2 minutes 50 seconds

Required Test #4: Pink Grapefruit

For the test, we peeled four medium grapefruits and got exactly one kilogram of product ready to use.

The grapefruit squeezed out very quickly, the fruits were juicy and we were very pleased with the amount of juice received. The juice itself turned out to be bright and fragrant, with a small amount of foam.

Well-squeezed pulp briquettes went into the waste container.

Result: 671 g of juice in 1 minute 30 seconds

Summing up the results of mandatory tests according to the iXBT.com methodology

According to the results of mandatory tests, you can calculate the average speed and efficiency for the Redmond RJ-930S vertical auger juicer using the iXBT.com method. The speed indicator was 3 minutes 31 seconds , efficiency – 561 grams .

You can see for yourself the results of all the juicers we tested , the result of comparing RJ-930S with competitors is as follows: in its class (auger juicers), it ranks 12th in extraction speed and 20th in efficiency .

It should not be forgotten that many factors can affect the efficiency of juice extraction, the main of which (with the exception of the qualities of the juicer itself) is the quality of the feedstock. But in our case, the narrow loading neck and the many small pieces that we placed in it gradually played a big role.

We also note that when processing solid products (carrots, cabbage), the extraction speed decreases: due to the small dimensions, the device can extract juice from only 1-2 small pieces at a time.

However, this can hardly be called a disadvantage: rather, it is a feature inherent in all compact models.

Juice from two kinds of oranges

We also decided to test the possibilities of our juicer on fresh fruits of ruby and ordinary oranges.

To do this, we took 4 fruits, cleaned and disassembled into slices. In finished form, we leveled the weight of oranges to 1 kg.

It took the juicer 2 minutes and 10 seconds, after which we got a bright and fragrant juice.

For the speed and a quite satisfactory amount (700 grams) of a tasty and pleasant drink in a glass, we are pleased to highly appreciate this model of juicer.

Result: excellent

Juice from cucumbers, celery stalk and apples

We also decided to test our juicer on a mixture of ingredients, and even with a fibrous celery stalk.

We prepared 1 kg of fresh ingredients in equal proportions and started the device.

In 2 minutes and 10 seconds, all the pieces were actively crushed by the auger and we got 657 g of a bright, aromatic and unusual drink.

The cake turned out to be dry, homogeneous, and all the celery fibers remained intact, which indicates a very gentle cold pressing method, in which the greatest amount of microelements is retained in the juice.

Result: excellent

findings

Redmond RJ-930S turned out to be a convenient and pleasant juicer to use. Of the advantages, we want to note the ease of assembly and operation, the inability to start the device in the wrong assembly, the absence of particles of cake flying out of the device onto work surfaces. The quality of the cake (fine, dry) is assessed as excellent, as well as the quality and uniformity of the juice.

This model has a modest size, low power, but at the same time an excellent motor and decent performance. It can be successfully used both in the home kitchen and in the country during the fruit and vegetable season. The main thing is not to forget to let the device rest every 20 minutes of work, taking breaks of 5 minutes. And thanks to the modest dimensions of the juicer, it will not be difficult to find a place to store it.

The quality and quantity of juice from the device are on the level, assembly and cleaning do not cause much trouble, and the noise from work is a strong discomfort. Due to the fact that the device does not crush the fruits with blades and does not heat them, but instead squeezes each piece with a screw in a “cold” mode, the juice retains the maximum benefit of fresh products.

Therefore, we can safely recommend this juicer to lovers and even connoisseurs of healthy freshly squeezed juices, especially if the speed of obtaining them is not ahead of the quality of the drink. The device proved to be excellent in working with products of different hardness and will be a faithful assistant in the kitchen.
