British MP from the Conservative Party Neil Parish told the BBC he is resigning after he was convicted of watching pornography twice in the workplace – right in the House of Commons meeting room.
According to him, “there is nothing to be proud of here.” Parish explained that the first time he got to a pornographic site by accident, and the second time he went there on purpose.
Two of his House of Commons colleagues accused him of browsing adult-only content on his phone while sitting next to them.
Parish had previously told the BBC he would fully cooperate with the investigation.
“Of course it’s embarrassing,” he said Friday. “I embarrassed both my wife and our entire family. But she still supports me, for which I am very grateful to her.
In an interview with the Times newspaper, the wife of the offending – now former – deputy, Sue Parish, said that this story, of course, is shameful, but at the same time noted that her husband was “a completely normal man” and “a wonderful person.”
“If you get angry and swear at every man who watches pornography, then there will be practically no wives in the world,” she added.
At the same time, she stressed that she herself does not see any attractiveness in pornography and understands why this upset her husband’s neighbors on the bench of the House of Commons.
Parish will now face an investigation by the parliamentary commissioner for compliance with the rules of conduct written in its charter.
At first, Neil Parish said that he would resign only if he was found guilty, but under pressure from his colleagues, he was forced to decide to leave. Now, by-elections will be held in his constituency. Their result, most likely, will not affect the general balance of power in the House of Commons, because the Conservatives traditionally win in his district.
