On Monday, May 2, 2022, the church honors the memory of John the Old Pechernik.
John got his nickname “Old Caveman” due to the fact that he lived in the old caves of the Holy Lavra. Also among the people he was called Paleurite or Paleolavrite. Unfortunately, very little information has been preserved about the life of this saint.
It is only known that he lived around the 8th century and, even in his youth, decided to go to Jerusalem, because he was always attracted by the pious Christian life. Then he settled in the monastery of St. Khariton, better known among Christians as the Sukki Lavra. It is located near the Dead Sea, not far from Bethlehem. The monastery is considered the oldest in Palestine. It is also called the Ancient (Old) Lavra. Ivan led a rather ascetic life as a monk here. He ate only bread, drank only water, prayed and worked. Thanks to such piety, he quickly reached spiritual heights. For this he was taken to the holy order.
