The fighting in Transnistria stopped in 1992, but the Russian military is still there.
Because of the war in Ukraine, the situation in Transnistria is becoming more tense.
This was announced by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a series of tweets on the Twitter microblogging service.
“Moldova is particularly exposed to the consequences of the war in Ukraine, in particular with increased tensions in Transnistria. France supports the stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
French diplomats remind that the region of Transnistria tried to secede from Moldova back in 1990 and declared itself independent as the Transnistrian Moldavian Republic after an armed conflict in 1992.
In fact, it is not recognized by the international community. Fighting in the area has ceased since 1992, but the Russian military is still there despite Russian commitments to withdraw.
“The Minister (Jean-Yves Le Drian – ed.) recalled that France’s support for Moldova will continue in a certain way, during his March visit to Chisinau, and on the basis of the Moldova Support Platform, in which we co-chair with Germany and Romania,” – summed up in the French Foreign Ministry.
Recall that the Russians can activate the troops of the unrecognized Transnistria . The front won’t change that. But additional tension, if a large number of Russian troops appear there, could occur. This was stated by the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Alexei Danilov.
Earlier it was reported that in Transnistria, Russian propaganda is spreading lies about the threat to Ukraine.
