Hockey club “Donbass” will not participate in the Champions League in the 2022/23 season due to the full-scale war that Russia unleashed against Ukraine.
The Donetsk team made their debut in the Champions League in the 2021/22 season. “Donbass” became the first Ukrainian club represented in these competitions. However, the armed aggression of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine made it impossible for the current champion of Ukraine to play in the Champions League in the next campaign.
This was reported by the press service of the tournament.
A wild card was taken away from the Donetsk team to participate in the competition. Instead of the Ukrainian club in the next Champions League will play the Slovenian “Olympia”.
“The act of war against Ukraine is a tragedy and it is impossible to imagine the suffering it causes to the people of Ukraine. Of course, one can understand that HC Donbass Donetsk cannot participate in the 2022/23 Champions League season under such circumstances, and we would like to thank the club for their benevolence and the tremendous effort they put into their first CHL appearance last season,” the organization said in a statement.
In the 2021/22 Champions League debut for the club, Donbass finished third in the group stage with eight points. The Donetsk team won two victories, lost twice in regular time and lost once to overtime and a shootout.
Earlier, TSN Prosport reported that the Ukrainian U-18 team finished their performance at the World Ice Hockey Championship with a crushing victory .
