What plants grow best in the shade: vegetables, bushes, flowers that love shade

May is the month of active work in the garden and dacha, when greens, vegetables, and flowers are sown and planted. What plants grow best in the shade, what can be planted under trees – in the TSN material. ua

Everyone knows that plants need sunlight, without which photosynthesis stops and the plant dies. Therefore, it is usually recommended to plant vegetables, berries, greens in a well-lit area. And what to do with the areas under the trees, which are in the shade from the house, the fence most of the day? So that the land does not disappear, it is only necessary to correctly select and plant crops that are less dependent on illumination.

The shadow is different. What plants to plant depending on the shade

Under the shadow, as a rule, they understand different concepts. The shadow can be scattered, thick, last 4 hours during the day, and can be almost the entire daylight hours. In addition, the shadow effect on plants differs in different regions of the country – the shadow in the south and in the north – these are completely different climatic conditions for crops. And if in the south you can practically plant everything in the shade, then in the north you will have to do with greens and salads. Consider crops that can be planted in the middle lane in areas with different levels of illumination.

  • Shadow diffused , which forms, for example, the leaves of an apple tree, cherry, plum. In such a shade, you can plant any plant.
  • A dense shadow formed under pine trees or the walls of a tall house, fence, etc. If such a shadow lasts most of the daylight hours, almost all crops can be planted here, with the exception of the most sun-loving ones – and these are watermelons, pumpkins. The fact that the plants will grow in such a shade will slow down their growth and fruit ripening, but will not affect the yield. In a small shade and from greenery , you can plant sorrel, lettuce, rhubarb, wild garlic, spices, tarragon, horseradish, vegetables – onions, garlic, beans, cucumbers, asparagus. Cauliflower and white cabbage will also grow. Radishes and beets will ripen, though later than plants growing in the sun. Radishes and turnips will grow even better in the shade, because they are protected here from diseases and caterpillars. Raspberries, black and red currants tolerate a small shadow well from the bushes .
  • A thick shadow, which almost all day harms also by the fact that the earth in the area under such a shadow practically does not dry out. Therefore, it is necessary to plant here not only shade-loving, but also moisture-dependent plants. In such a plot it is better to grow certain types of flowers. Without direct sunlight, many perennials feel good: periwinkle, lily of the valley, forget-me-not, different types of fern, buzulnik, hellebore, primrose, violets, anemones, lungwort, hydrangeas, and others. Tulips can grow, but they will bloom quite late.

Let’s list the vegetables that will feel good where most of the day does not get sunlight.

  • Perennial bow. In addition to greenery, it is also an ornamental plant. For example, chives have lilac caps.
  • Beet roots in the shade will be small but sweet.
  • Rhubarb, which is very fond of watering and moist soil.
  • Ramson can be collected not only in the forest in the spring, but also grown in a shady place in the garden.
  • Borage borage grows where the sun’s rays practically do not reach.
  • Lettuce crops – leaf lettuce, arugula, spinach, sorrel, leaf mustard and watercress grow well in the shade and do not give that bitterness, as the same plants get in the sun.
  • Garlic from a shaded area will be, although small, but tasty and fragrant.
  • Greens and herbs – cilantro, curly parsley, celery, oregano, mint, tarragon, fragrant lemon balm, lovage, except for basil and thyme.
  • Parsnips and root parsley will also grow in the shade.
  • Shade-tolerant varieties of beans and bush beans have been specially bred.
  • Horseradish is the real king of the shade, unpretentious neither to the sun nor to the soil.
