Driven to "collective farms" and steal tons of grain: how Russian invaders terrorize Ukrainian farmers

Russian occupiers in Ukraine are terrorizing farmers, forcing them to join “collective farms”, buying grain cheaply or even stealing it. These actions of the invaders are a violation of articles 31, 33 of the Geneva Convention for the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War.

In particular, in the Lugansk region , the Russian invaders create “collective farms” and force local farmers to transfer their own agricultural equipment to their ownership. Because of the farmer’s refusal to comply with this demand, the invaders shot down his house.

This was announced by the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova on May 4.

In the Melitopol district of the Zaporozhye region, Russian invaders are buying up grain at a twice lower price . If the farmers refuse to cooperate, the invaders threaten physical violence and confiscation of grain along with farm equipment.

In addition, Denisova said that Russian invaders stole more than 60 tons of wheat from an agricultural enterprise in Kamenka-Dneprovskaya Zaporozhye region and took it away in a truck belonging to the enterprise.

“In general, the Russian horde took out about 400 tons of grain from the temporarily occupied regions of Zaporozhye, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which is one third of all the regions’ reserves,” the Ukrainian ombudsman said in a statement.

She stressed that violations of property rights and threats of seizure of private property in the territories occupied by Russia are a violation of Articles 31, 33 of the Geneva Convention for the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War. They strictly forbid the occupiers to use physical or moral coercion against persons in the occupied territories, as well as to rob and confiscate property.

“I appeal to the UN Commission to Investigate Human Rights Violations during Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine to take into account these facts of war crimes and human rights violations in Ukraine by the occupying state,” Denisova urged.

Recall, according to the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, the Russian invaders removed 100 thousand tons of grain from the Lugansk region , so the sowing campaign has not yet begun there.
