Szijjarto named the condition under which Hungary will support the oil embargo against the Russian Federation.
Hungary will agree to new energy sanctions against the Russian Federation only if crude oil imports from Russia through the pipeline are exempted from them.
This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijjarto, reports 444.hu.
“A phase-out of oil supplies with a deadline of next year is a decision that cannot be supported as Hungary’s secure energy supply will be completely destroyed by the sanctions package,” he said.
Szijjártó insists he cannot support this embargo because it would destroy the country’s energy security.
“Hungary can now buy enough oil to run its economy only from Russia,” he said, adding that this is a geographic and infrastructural reality.
Earlier, the Hungarian government said that the EU plan to completely ban Russian oil is unsatisfactory, as it threatens Hungary’s energy security. Hungary and Slovakia, heavily dependent on Russian energy, will be given until the end of 2023 to comply with the sanctions, a year longer than other member states.
