Ukraine’s application is already going through all the necessary procedures at an accelerated pace
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, is not yet ready to name a specific date for the consideration of Ukraine’s application for EU membership on the agenda for EU leaders and intends to do this when the best moment comes for this.
Interfax-Ukraine writes about this.
He explained that after the European Commission hands over its findings in June, the issue will be further considered in the European Council.
“In the Council, I will be obliged to assess when we are ready to put this topic on the agenda of the European Council. I will consult with all the actors to assess when the best moment is and we will be ready to have this debate at the level of the Council of Europe. Whether it will be in June or later, I cannot say today,” he said.
Ukraine’s application is already going through all the necessary procedures at an accelerated pace.
“In fact, a few days after we received the application, we quickly made a decision, instructing the European Commission to provide its findings. It usually takes 8-9 months. De facto, the decision was made in a few days,” added Michel.
“It is clear that this is a process based on reforms, because the issue of membership is connected with a common approach to fundamental elements – the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary, the fight against corruption, the single market, economic reforms,” he concluded.
As reported, Zelensky said that Ukraine should receive the status of a candidate member of the EU in the near future.
