The story of how I tried to switch to Linux as the main OS

It just doesn’t sit well for me. I’ve seen enough stories on YouTube that Linux is a wonderful system. Beautiful, simple, user-friendly and windows in general are evil. Well, even I don’t know what kind of horse bit me, let me think I’ll try these Linuxes of yours. Why am I just using Windows as a lamer. Well, I also watched a couple of videos for starters, where reviewers advise installing the Fedora OS for a beginner. Well, since they advise, we will put it.

I downloaded the fedora image from the official site. Downloaded Balena Etcher to mount the image on a flash drive and started the process

Ten minutes, and the image is on a flash drive. Once again I checked that everything important is saved to my NAS and I start the installation.

This is what the point of no return looks like:

At the first stages, everything is basically clear and native. We select a disk for installation, mark up, select the region, language and layout.

I wait 10 minutes and I’m a linuxoid:

So far so good, I’m starting the setup.

But here’s the problem, when you try to add a google account, the computer freezes right tightly. I reboot, again the welcome screen and settings. I try to log into my account again and again the computer freezes. Okay, I didn’t really want to. I continue the installation by skipping the point of adding accounts. Everything seems to work, though it’s terribly unusual. There is no start menu, but that’s okay. I’ll get used to it. I’m starting to install the programs I need, since Linux is attractive, it’s a simple installation of any programs from the repositories. Just like in android, we install everything from Google Play. Here everything is the same, enter the name of the desired program, and click “install”. But for some reason, there are no necessary programs in the repositories. And the computer periodically freezes for a few minutes right tightly, even the mouse does not move.

As a result, after spending the evening trying to install at least the Telegram messenger, I understand that this OS does not suit me. Well, in fact, it’s not that simple. I start reading manuals, wasting time, googling and Yandex. But it’s all to no avail. Even for some reason, the command line is not amenable to mastering. I understand that I’m stupid, and like this, the new OS won’t give in to me with a swoop, I decide to change the OS. The second most popular, according to YouTube reviewers, is Ubuntu. Well, the Internet will not lie. Therefore, I take out a laptop on Windows, download the ubuntu image and make a new bootable flash drive. I install Ubuntu. Now, right now, I’ll definitely become a hardened Linuxoid, and everyone around will understand that I’m not made with a finger and cool. Yes, yes, that’s right.

15 minutes and I have a new OS on my computer. Ubuntu. Beautiful. Purple and really pleasing to the eye shell. By the way, I love purple since childhood. Well, here, unlike Fedora, there is another version of the Gnome shell, which is closer to Windows. Something more understandable. Immediately after installation, the first thing I climb into the repository is to install the programs I need. Telegram, opera, wechat, music player, photo processing program. And here is everything you need to eat.

Put everything I need. Well, almost everything. For some reason, there is no lightroom, but I have a subscription until the end of the year. Well, I’ll deal with that later. Everything seems to work, especially the browser. Fortunately, I have not been chromium-dependent for several years now, and Firefox is native and familiar to me. Yes, and all the settings and bookmarks in my account were quickly synchronized by account. I use ubuntu, I wipe tears of joy with one hand, I click with the mouse with the other hand. THE BEAUTY! The truth is, it’s not very common. And I also have several hard drives in my computer, and since they are in NTFS format, when installing a new OS, they are in read only mode. Save nothing, just count. Yes, and periodically NAS falls off and stupidly does not let. But what to do, the new OS, he just has not yet understood that we will now live by the new rules.

On the second day of use, I notice that not everything in my new OS is perfect. The computer intermittently freezes for several minutes. And you have to either wait or reboot. In addition, some files are not read here, and when watching a video, you can safely throw a coin with the sides “ will show normally ” or “ hang tightly ”. I even installed another player, but somehow everything works randomly. You also need to know all sorts of wisdom in order to configure, install, install, turn on.

But I’m not stupid! I can master everything! Therefore, I suffer, I read Google ( Yandex was thrown out of Firefox, now it is not held in high esteem by developers and is set as a default search engine through dances with a tambourine ). And somewhere I read that the freezes are related to the incorrect operation of the video card driver. Well, I found an item with drivers, I chose a different type of driver. The computer did something, and says it is necessary to reboot. Well, I reloaded it. And what do I see? And just…. ( here you can put any obscene words instead of dots ) now only one of the two monitors works for me, and that one is half the screen. Everything is stretched and flattened.

I’m trying to roll back, and install the type of driver that was before. But there is an error and that’s it:

A google search comes up with several solutions, but nothing comes up for me. Done master, broke.

Eeeh. Looks like it’s not my destiny to be a Linuxoid. I take out a disk with licensed Windows and an external drive from the stash. And I proceed to install the native and familiar operating system.

By the way. A smart reader can say that I have specific hardware, and the system simply did not want to install on it correctly. But to be honest, my tastes are not specific, and all the stuffing of the computer is the most common, though not to say that it is new. I bought a computer back in 2012:

As a result, another 20 minutes, and I’m back on my Windows computer. Habitual darling Windows. And as for Linux, it’s not mine to see. I sat on Windows for 20 years, and I will sit for the same amount more. I respect Linuxoids, and I don’t want to say anything against it. But like this, after spending two days, I concluded for myself that Linux is not for me.

Conclusion:

I’ll tell you right away. All the events described above are fictitious and are also the author’s delirium and his invention. All resemblances to actual events are coincidental. This article is not intended to offend anyone or say that an alternative OS is bad. It just happened. Didn’t get lucky. And the fact that I designed this text into an article and posted it on blogs is just such a mood. Self-irony, but to amuse the people. But I also want to add a well-known saying: “The fairy tale is a lie, but there is a hint in it. Good fellows lesson. Well, and also “you wouldn’t chase the pop for cheapness.”

For myself, I only concluded that if one place itches, you should not immediately undermine and engage in rash actions. Otherwise, you can spend several days on who knows what, with dubious benefits. And at that time he could go to the dacha and dig up a garden, to the delight of his wife.
