Cyber police exposed hackers who stole money through phishing sites

Cyber policemen of Vinnitsa region exposed a criminal hacker group that used compromised accounts of search services, placed ads with phishing sites of foreign banks and embezzled money.

It is noted that one of the members of the hacker group is a 29-year-old resident of the village. Yakushivtsy. He bought HTTP cookies on the Dark Web (files stored in the browser and containing the necessary login data or accounts), which allowed unauthorized interference with the accounts of users of search services. Thus, it was possible to appropriate at least UAH 5 million.

From compromised accounts, the attackers paid for advertising for phishing websites of foreign banks. Thus, these fraudulent sites were brought to the top positions during the search. Next, the attackers obtained the credentials of bank customers who tried to log in to fake resources. And with the help of the data obtained, the attackers appropriated the money. It is noted that the group advertised phishing sites both for their own purposes and at the request of other hackers.

Currently, law enforcement officers are establishing the final amount of damage caused to the victims.

Criminal proceedings have been opened under Part 2 of Art. 361 (Unauthorized intervention in the work of information (automated), electronic communication, information and communication systems, electronic communication networks) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for up to 5 years in prison.
