William Burns believes that Putin is “convinced that a doubling of military efforts will still allow him to make progress.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin believes he cannot afford to lose in Ukraine.
This was stated on May 7 by CIA director William Burns, Radio Liberty reports .
“He’s in a mood where he doesn’t believe he can afford to lose,” Burns said.
The CIA director believes that Putin is “convinced that doubling (the military effort – ed.) will still allow him to make progress.”

At the same time, the department noted that one should not underestimate the possible risk of Putin using nuclear weapons during the second phase of the war due to the numerous failures of the Russian army on the battlefield.
