Mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski spoke categorically against the celebration of May 9 by Russians in Warsaw.
Against the background of the Russian war against Ukraine, Trzaskowski called this event a “provocation” and called on the Polish Foreign Ministry to ban it.
The mayor of the Polish capital wrote about this on his Twitter.
“I am categorically against this (celebration of May 9 – ed.). Not a single Polish public institution should join this initiative. Moreover, it should be banned. I have no consent to the aggressor holiday in Warsaw,” Trzaskowski wrote.
According to him, the Polish Foreign Ministry seems to be planning to help the Russians in organizing the May 9 celebration. However, Trzaskovsky is convinced that against the backdrop of Russian aggression in Ukraine, Russian crimes and the genocide of Ukrainians, such a position of the Polish authorities is unacceptable .
“The passive attitude towards the organization of the ceremony by the Russian authorities in the public space of the capital causes overwhelming resistance – both from me and from thousands of Warsaw residents who have been helping Ukrainians for weeks. Hundreds and thousands of those who were forced to leave their homes and end up in our city, escaping Russian bombs.I expect a clear declaration that the government services will do everything in their power to prevent this from happening, which I consider a provocation in the current situation.I want to make it clear that I do not agree to the ceremony of worshiping a Russian soldier when a Russian soldier is killing innocent people,” Trzaskowski said in a statement to the Polish Foreign Ministry.
In response to this, Deputy Foreign Minister of Poland Marcin Przydacz on his Twitter said that the Polish Foreign Ministry did not plan to support Russia in organizing the celebration of May 9 Victory Day. It is noted that the Polish Foreign Ministry refused the Russian Embassy in such a request. Przydacz stressed that according to the law, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs cannot ban the celebration in Warsaw, but the mayor of the city can.
Recall that earlier the authorities of Berlin banned the use of any Ukrainian symbols on the level with the Russian on May 8 and 9. The Ukrainian ambassador to Germany called it “a slap in the face of the Ukrainian people.”
After a flurry of criticism, the Berlin authorities allowed the use of Ukrainian symbols on May 8-9 for a limited time.
