Ukrainian and Canadian delegations during today’s talks in Kyiv agreed to expand economic and defense cooperation.
In particular, Canada decided to remove all trade barriers for Ukraine for a period of one year.
This was announced by the President of Ukraine during the traditional evening video message on Sunday, May 8.
“We have an extremely important decision by Canada to remove all barriers to trade for a period of a year. Thank you, Canada. This agreement was reached in negotiations with Trudeau, this will work both in the interests of the Ukrainian and Canadian peoples. Among other things, Canada has a strong potential in mine action. We hope that this potential will be used in Ukraine, where the Russian invaders have left thousands of mines, trip wires, shells,” the head of state said.
The press service of the Office of the President reported the details of the meeting between Trudeau and Zelensky. During the talks, the parties discussed Canada’s support for the Ukrainian state in the struggle for independence and territorial integrity, as well as a number of bilateral issues.
Zelensky called economic support for Ukraine an equally important aspect. Also during the talks, the head of state announced his intention to extend the discussion of the abolition of the visa regime for citizens of Ukraine.
For his part, the Prime Minister of Canada reaffirmed Ukraine’s steadfast support, in particular, financial and humanitarian. With regard to arms assistance, he noted that Canada would provide anti-tank systems, satellite communications equipment, and so on. In addition, the Prime Minister of Canada assured Zelensky of further facilitating the removal of duties on imports from Ukraine.
Recall, on Sunday, May 8, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was on a visit to Ukraine. The Canadian politician visited the hero-city Irpin destroyed by the invaders . Also during the visit, he raised the flag of his country over the diplomatic mission in the capital of Ukraine, which indicates the return of the Canadian embassy to Ukraine.
Trudeau also met in Kiev with President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Canadian politician, commenting on his visit to Ukraine, noted that his country “will always stand side by side with Ukraine.”
