What day is it today in Ukraine and the world

May 8 – Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation . An international event that carries deep symbolism. Memory – We must not forget the millions of people who died during World War II. Reconciliation – all countries that participated in that terrible war must reconcile. Unfortunately, the enemy again came to the territory of Ukraine, so we took up arms to protect ourselves and our families. However, we believe that a new victory awaits us very soon. And now it is worth remembering in prayer those who died in the period 1939-1945.

May 8 is also International Mother’s Day . The event always falls on the second Sunday in May. Special respect for women who give new life was in ancient times. It is known that in many cultures it found its place in the cult of the mother goddess. The prehistory of the modern holiday is quite difficult and tragic. It was founded by American Ann Jarvis, mother of 13 children, of which only 4 survived to adulthood. She lived in the 19th century, when this was not something exceptional. In 1858, Anne organized a meeting of mothers and doctors to learn the rules of hygiene, sanitation, which would help reduce the number of infectious diseases in children. The tradition took root so much that it later grew into something much more. Today, children are sure to congratulate their mothers on the holiday.

May 8th is International Day of the Red Cross and Red Crescent . The date was chosen in honor of the birthday of the Swiss public figure Henri Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross and the first Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The first Red Cross Day took place in 1949.

May 8 in the church calendar is the day of memory of the apostle evangelist Mark . Apostle from 70, also known as John Mark, nephew of the Apostle Barnabas. He was born in Jerusalem and was the closest associate of the apostles Paul, Peter and Barnabas. Together with them he visited Seleucia, and from there he went to the island of Cyprus. Later he returned to Jerusalem, visited with the Apostle Paul in Rome. He was in Egypt, where he founded the Church.

Also, it was the Apostle Mark who laid the foundation for the Christian school in Egypt, from where came such famous teachers of the Church as St. Dionysius, Clement of Alexandria, St. Gregory the Wonderworker. Then Mark decided to visit Africa, namely Libya, Nektopolis. There he delivered sermons. During these travels, the Holy Spirit descended on him and ordered him to go to Alexandria in order to convert the pagans there to Christianity.

When the apostle completed his divine service, the pagans attacked him, beat him, and then threw him into prison. There, the Lord Jesus Christ himself descended to the Apostle Mark, strengthening his spirit before suffering. The next day, angry people took Mark to court, and he died on the way. At first, the pagans thought to burn the body of a Christian, but the fire immediately went out and thunder rang out in the sky. Then he was buried in a stone tomb. A church was built in its place in 310. And in 820 the relics of the Apostle Mark were transferred to Venice.
