The US Treasury Department has imposed new sanctions against Russia and Belarus for aggression against Ukraine.
The new restrictions concern the export restrictions of the Russian Federation from the United States , and the main Russian banks , including Sberbank and Gazprombank, as well as propaganda TV channels, were also subject to sanctions. In total, 2.6 thousand officials from Russia and Belarus fall under the sanctions.
This is stated in a press release from the US Department of the Treasury, published on Sunday, May 8.
Kremlin TV channels
The Russian TV channels Channel One, Rossiya-1 and NTV came under US sanctions. The ban concerns the supply of equipment and the ability of American companies to advertise on them.
Russian banks
The US has imposed sanctions against a number of major Russian banks, in particular Sberbank and Gazprombank . The Moscow Industrial Bank and ten of its subsidiaries also fell under the restrictions.
It is noted that the sanctions against the leaders of Gazprombank were the first against the trading division of the Russian gas giant. But they add that the sanctions against Gazprombank are not about freezing its assets and banning any transactions with it.
Export restrictions against Russia
The US has also imposed new export restrictions on Russia. American companies are prohibited from providing consulting, advertising and accounting services to Russians. Thus, the Treasury wants to block Russia’s access to certain key services of US companies that the Russian Federation and the Russian elites use to build wealth, generate income “for Putin’s war machine and evade sanctions.”
The United States also imposed sanctions on Promtekhnologiya LLC, which manufactures weapons, such as rifles, used by Russian troops in Ukraine. The export of uranium, plutonium and other nuclear products to Russia will also be banned.
“Today, we are further shrinking the Russian economy and access to the services and technology needed for this unprovoked invasion. Banning Russia from accessing valuable United States professional services adds pressure to the Kremlin and interrupts its ability to evade sanctions imposed by the United States and our partners.” . We also focus on Putin’s ability to generate income that fuels his aggression, as well as organizations and their leaders that support his destructive actions,” Treasury Secretary Janet L. Ellen commented on the sanctions.
Recall that on Sunday, May 8, the summit of the G7 countries was held, which was also attended by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. As a result of the meeting, the G7 declared full assistance to Ukraine, condemned Russia’s aggression and promised to abandon its oil.
