The development of the Ukrainian self-propelled artillery mount 2S22 “Bogdan” with a caliber of 155 mm is carried out by the PAB Kramatorsk Heavy Machine Tool Plant on the basis of a joint decision with the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. Experimental design work within the framework of the state defense order has been carried out since February 2016. The first sample was shown on July 14, 2018. During the military parade in honor of the Independence Day of Ukraine (July 24, 2018), all Ukrainians were able to see the latest Ukrainian creation of the self-propelled guns 2S22 “Bogdan”.

Back in early 2009, the TASCO Corporation completed the development of a prototype of a Ukrainian self-propelled gun mount based on the KrAZ-63221 chassis. Interestingly, even then, a 155 mm NATO-caliber howitzer was installed on the self-propelled guns. This caliber is standard for field artillery of the NATO divisional level, and this is how it differs from the 152-mm howitzer, which was considered the standard in the USSR. The very first ideas of moving away from the Soviet model and switching to NATO standards were voiced by the commander of the RVIA, Major General Vyacheslav Gorbylev in 2017.

On July 14, 2018, the first public mention of the Ukrainian self-propelled guns “Bogdan” appears. Then the military expert Serhiy Zgurets said that they were going to show the artillery installation during the parade in honor of the Independence Day of Ukraine. He also announced the 155 mm caliber. After some time, there was also confirmation of the possibility of using the “NATO” standard. After all, the Artyom State Joint-Stock Company began to produce such shells.

In July-August 2018, there were doubts whether the new self-propelled guns would use a caterpillar drive, like the Polish AHS Krab, or still a wheeled chassis, like in the Czech self-propelled guns “Dana” or the Slovak Zuzana. They were dispelled on August 10, 2018, when military expert Sergei Zgurets posted the first photo of the installation. On it, she was placed on a wheeled chassis.

In the course of fire tests, the latest active-reactive munitions HE ER BT were used, the production of which began to be handled by the Artem State Chemical Combine. The first sample of the system that successfully passed all the tests was manufactured in early October 2019. Of course, it is difficult to say about the cost of the Bogdan self-propelled guns. But before the self-propelled gun mount was shown at the Independence Day parade, about 140 million hryvnias had already been spent on it.

Ukrainian-made barrels are used in the self-propelled artillery mount. They are made from the same alloy as the M120-15 Molot mortars.

The self-propelled guns have anti-ball armored protection for the crew against B-32 balls of caliber (7.62 mm) at a distance of no more than 30 meters and from fragments of similar projectiles.
