We’ve already seen everything. In order to add tuning capabilities to headphones, someone goes for replaceable sound guides, someone adds filters to compensation holes, and a system of one or more switches is built into more expensive models. The KZ company decided to go its own way, fitting three pairs in a box at once. In some, the emphasis is on deep bass, the second is balanced, and the third, as it is written, with an emphasis on high resolution. Moreover, all this diversity was united under a single name: KZ EDA. The set is inexpensive, and the sound surpasses everything that I have ever listened to in this segment. I think we have new killers in the lower segment of the headphones.

Packaging and equipment

They came in a slightly enlarged cardboard box with a picture of all three types of headphones and a complete list of technical specifications on the reverse side. Of the important, I will mention an impedance of 30 ohms and a sensitivity of 113 dB / mW.

The kit included instructions and two pairs of white silicone ear cushions of different sizes. The only surprise is that there were as many as three pairs of medium-sized tips in total (they were originally installed on the headphones), and all the rest – only one. Well, the cable in the set is also one. That is, it will not work to immediately supply friends or relatives with headphones, you will have to buy more cables and, possibly, nozzles.

However, the stock cable does not break the patterns here, the very “white noodles” from the latest sets, with its own resistance of 0.860 ohms. It looks good, you can use it, but it is better to replace it with a good copper one from the same manufacturer.

The earhooks here are from standard heat shrink, and the connection is made on fork QDC connectors 0.75 mm. In my case, as you can see, it also has a headset unit .

Design/Ergonomics

The cups themselves look almost the same, except for the color of translucent plastic, metal edging and the company logo. And so – one to one.

Inside, a dynamic driver of the same diameter can be traced, above which there is a compensation hole and a plastic sound guide, with a protrusion to hold the ear pads and a pasted protective mesh.

It looks decent, but more is not required. Landing is also excellent: comfortable and soundproofing is normal.

measurements

According to the measurements, we have slightly longer pulses relative to the norm, quite acceptable discrepancies between the left and right channels and distortion, reaching 1.89% in peaks on bass headphones, and 0.70% on balanced ones and those with high resolution.

The phase behaves naturally everywhere, and attenuations at 30 and 60 dB correspond to somewhere around 76 and 96 ms, with minor perturbations in the low frequency region.

In terms of frequency response, we have a strikingly different picture, depending on the pair of headphones. So the bass ones have a bass boost of 13 dB, with the selection of the intelligibility area, an imitation of the auricle and a peak at 8 kHz to enhance the sharpness of the sound. Moreover, this peak is equal in amplitude to the rise at low frequencies, which creates a balance in the acoustic sense.

The balanced model has 10dB of bass boost, with slightly less emphasis at 2.5kHz and 5kHz, and exactly the same peak at 8kHz. Which rises noticeably above the rest of the frequency range and, as a result, can give an unpleasant overtone to the ear.

Headphones aimed at high resolution on the bottoms completely coincide with the previous ones, but the emphasis on 2.5 and 5 kHz is made much higher, closer to the bass version. Well, the peak at 8 kHz still rises, but within acceptable limits, relative to the rest of this range. This means that it is heard without unnecessary overtones or any other distortions.

With measurements from the manufacturer, my graphs coincided with the accuracy to the scale and depth of the ear pads in the measuring stand, that is, pretty well.

Sound

In terms of sound, I would call the bass version and the high-res version the most balanced. The first ones give such a deep textured bass, which is used as a basis for a variety of rhythmic sections and, of course, vocals. Why is there enough energy, depth and space in the middle for a super realistic transmission of almost any instrument. The timbre volume is also felt here, but it is not very pronounced. Frankly, I have no questions about high ones either: they are clean, transparent and moderately long. All this is heard comfortably, naturally and very melodic. All tools are in their places, nothing really sticks out and is not relegated to the background. That’s why, I think that it is these headphones that the vast majority of music lovers will keep. In addition, they are absolutely not picky about both the source and the genres. Excellent bass depth, very clear textural mids and pleasant attenuation at the tops.

Headphones with a bias in resolution in fact, they are. The lower bass is barely felt here, thereby shifting the balance to the high frequencies. And from here follows the very feeling of speed, transparency and high resolution, which the manufacturer is talking about. First of all, those who have a slight hint of a low end will like the model, and the intelligibility, dynamics, level of drawing and naturalness of timbre transmission are taken into account in the most important aspects. The sound here is really very lively and just super pleasant. If not for the bass version, I would single it out as the most interesting in terms of building a musical canvas. Despite the highlighting of the upper part of the spectrum, the model retained both expressiveness and melody, that is, it sounds really cool, and in terms of detail it approaches high-quality purely rebar solutions. In the sources, I would only recommend something bass, and from the style, on the contrary, I removed everything with an emphasis on bass.

The balanced version has quantitatively averaged low frequencies, here they are felt much better than in the previous model, and slightly unnatural highs, with a slight overtone. From the point of view of acoustic music, this model seems to be the weakest, but in heavy and electronic genres, bass is normal here, and there are enough highs, the main thing is that the peak does not fall on a zone that is sensitive to you. It sounds good, of course, too, but against the background of the previous two versions for jazz, I would definitely not choose it. But in the metal, she showed herself more or less respectably. But, alas, only in it.

Regarding the construction of the stage, there is enough air in orchestral music, the space is felt, the instruments are well positioned in width and at a basic level in depth. For listening to some serious material in the acoustic sense, these headphones, of course, are suitable, but not that perfect. This option is more for the good old rock, various electronics, ethnic music, club jazz, blues, soul and other genres that are not the most demanding for the transmission of spatial echelons.

However, if you take into account the price tag, the KZ EDA sounds amazing. Pleasant for its mass sound throughout the entire frequency range, detailed, simply super realistic and at the same time juicy middle, with excellent expressiveness, melody and crystal clear highs. The sound, without a doubt, has its own character, perfectly traceable texture, clear, natural sound with excellent dynamics and depth. Given that we pay, consider, 10 bucks for a pair of headphones, the result is absolutely enchanting. It’s just incredibly cool. I’m sure this is a new hit in its niche.

findings

As a result, all of the variety of dynamic headphones available in the KZ EDA kit sit well, look decent, the nozzles included in the kit are decent, quite working cable, but the most valuable thing is, of course, their sound. Regardless of the chosen pair, we get a weight that is pleasant to the ear, a middle that is amazing in terms of clarity and realism, and a drawing of timbres that is simply excellent in terms of dynamics, expressiveness and melody.

I would call the bass pair the most preferable and balanced, but for those who love extreme speed and maximum bias in detail, a high-resolution model is also. What the manufacturer called the balanced version, I liked only in the context of the metal. Otherwise, the highs are emphasized too strongly against the background of the rest of the frequency range.

The remaining two models caused me a direct wow effect, they sound fantastic for their niche. Even MoonDrop Chu, beloved by many music lovers, against the background of the heroes of the review, will seem cloudy, clamped and too insipid, it makes no sense to compare with the rest. The heroes of the review caused frank delight in me, I can quite recommend them for purchase. KZ once again turned out to be a hit in the lower price range. They never cease to amaze, even against the backdrop of much more expensive solutions, which we will have to talk about soon.
