This statement was made by the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces – First Deputy Minister of Defense of Belarus Viktor Gulevich.
” The grouping created by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the southern operational direction with a total number of up to 20 thousand people also requires a response from us,” Gulevich said.
He stressed that NATO continues to build up its military presence near the borders of Belarus.
“The group created over the past six months has more than doubled both in quantity and quality,” the statement says.
The head of the Belarusian General Staff also said that the appearance in the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas of a group carrying sea and air-based cruise missiles, an increase in the aviation group in Poland and the Baltic countries allegedly indicate “a growing threat to the Republic of Belarus.”
“In order to ensure the security of the Republic of Belarus in the southern direction, the forces of the special operations forces units are deployed in three tactical directions,” the head of the General Staff emphasized.
He also said that as part of the second stage of checking the immediate reaction forces , battalion tactical groups were advanced to the western and northwestern operational directions. To strengthen them , air defense, missile forces and artillery units are being advanced to ensure combat functioning.
According to the report, as part of the verification of territorial defense in May, Belarus will form territorial troops in two regions in the south and west of the country.
“From May 10, 2022, the executive committees of the Brest and Grodno regions are forming the territorial troops of the Kobrin and Lida regions, respectively,” the report says.
About 430 people are planned to be called from the reserve for the military meeting . After the completion of the formation of military units of the territorial troops, the called-up personnel will begin to perform tasks of guarding and defending important facilities.
“The measures taken are aimed at increasing the ability of local government bodies to form territorial troops and the readiness of territorial defense command and control bodies and military units of territorial troops to carry out tasks as intended,” the Belarusian Defense Ministry said.
Recall, on May 9, the self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said that Belarusians are not aggressors, but will support Russia.
