According to him, Germany already understands that all these years its policy towards Russia has been wrong.
Germany already admits that all these years its political attitude towards Russia has been wrong. After all, the war could not be avoided. And ex-Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel never trusted Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This was announced by the deputy of the Bundestag from the party “Christian Democratic Union” (CDU) Thomas Heilman in an interview with TSN.ua.
“We tried to avoid war. Now we have a war. Therefore, it was not the best policy that we followed, both the Western world and mainly Germany. I talked with Merkel. I know her for 20 years. And she always said that Putin lies. That’s why she never trusted Putin. She told me personally during a one-on-one conversation that she didn’t trust Putin at all. She said that he was lying. Therefore, we are not surprised that he is a liar. On the other hand, the German experience during the The Cold War shows that intense economic relations help to cool down, to calm down. And this was inherent not only to Merkel, but also to the usual German faith of the German political class from the left to the right wing,” he said.
The politician also stressed that Germany does not trust Russia. However, sometimes the economic interests of countries still prevail in the political arena.
“We do not trust them (Russians – ed.) personally and we know that they, unfortunately, lie to us, but if economic interests depend on us as much as we depend on them, this will prevent them from committing absolutely irrational actions. And so it was in 1970-1980, when there was the Soviet Union. Dramatically or catastrophically, this is no longer there because of what Putin did,” the deputy said.
According to him, the war against Ukraine is “Russia’s economic suicide.” This will bring Russia back 30-40 years.
“The economic downturn will be incredible and will intensify. We see how many people have already left Russia, how many relationships have been severed and the like. Therefore, from an economic point of view, starting this criminal war against Ukraine was completely illogical,” Heilman stressed.
Recall that Germany supports the full membership of Ukraine in the EU.
