According to well-known analyst and insider Ming-Chi Kuo, in the second half of next year, Apple plans to abandon its own Lightning connector in the iPhone and switch to the conventional USB-C connector. Thus, the iPhone 15 may be the first Apple smartphone with USB-C, which will allow it to increase data transfer and charging speeds. However, according to Kuo, the implementation of such innovations will depend heavily on support at the iOS level. The insider substantiated his assumptions with a study he conducted – we are talking about a survey of Apple suppliers, from whom he often receives useful information about the company’s plans.

Rumors that Apple may abandon Lightning have been circulating for years. The company gradually began moving away from the proprietary port in 2018 by adding USB-C to the iPad. In addition, Type-C ports with Thunderbolt have been used on Mac computers for quite some time, and the MacBook 12 with a single USB-C port in 2015 was one of the first such devices on the market. Additional pressure on Apple is being exerted by the European Union , which has been trying for years at the legal level to force manufacturers of equipment to use a single charging connector.

There were speculations that the company would hold out until the last minute and would rather strip its flagship smartphones of connectors altogether than switch to another standard, providing completely wireless data transfer and battery charging via MagSafe. It is possible that this method will remain an alternative.
