Ukraine can expect a demographic crisis due to the departure of a large number of women and children abroad.
To avoid it, it is necessary not to lose contact with Ukrainian refugees and encourage them to return to Ukraine after the end of the war .
Director of the Institute of Demography and Social Research Ella Libanova said this on the air of the telethon.
“As long as shelling continues in all regions of the country, women with children will not return from abroad. If the hostilities in Ukraine drag on for an indefinite period or several years, women who were forced to leave the country with their children will adapt to life in other countries. And then, after the victory, it is quite possible that Ukrainian men will join them. As a result, Ukraine may lose entire Ukrainian families,” Libanova said.
According to her, the system of maintaining constant communication with Ukrainian refugees can help this.
“If an internally displaced person, while abroad, can perform her labor duties remotely, she must be given the opportunity to work. We cannot push women to seek their destiny abroad, because displaced persons need to communicate and have the means to live.
It is necessary to keep in touch with the migrants, perhaps, consular services abroad should also get involved in this issue. Everything must be done so that internally displaced persons abroad understand that Ukraine has not abandoned them, that society, the state, and the family are waiting for them,” Libanova said.
Recall that the number of people who left Ukraine, fleeing the Russian invasion, exceeded 6 million . This is the biggest refugee crisis in Europe since the end of World War II.
