The Washington administration sent an official statement to Greece asking for permission to deploy F-35 and F-15 fighters on the territory of the island of Crete.
Athens is already preparing a response. If the corresponding application is approved, the US will be able to deploy fighters at the Souda air base.
The Turkish edition Ulusal Kanal writes about this.
It is noted that one of the main NATO strongholds in the region is located on the island. There, US aircraft are likely to take part in military exercises in the Mediterranean.
It is not yet known exactly how many pieces of equipment and personnel the States are sending to the island.
In addition, the publication reports that the United States requires Greece to send weapons to Ukraine, in particular, S-300 batteries, air defense systems and BMP-1 armored vehicles.
Recall that Greece is helping the Russian Federation to circumvent sanctions, despite the EU’s attempts to ban the export of Russian energy resources.
