The first trial against the Russian military began in Kyiv. The 21-year-old squad leader of the 4th Kantemirovskaya Panzer Division, Vadim Shishimarin, is accused of shooting a 62-year-old civilian riding a bicycle along the side of the road in the Sumy region.
He faces a sentence of up to life imprisonment. Shishimarin’s lawyer Viktor Ovsyannikov told the BBC that his client has not yet decided whether he will plead guilty.
Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian president, said that he knew nothing about the start of such a trial and stressed that he did not know “how true this is.”
