Bridget Brink is the new US ambassador to Ukraine: what is known about the diplomat

For three years, the post of US Ambassador to Ukraine has been vacant, but now it will be filled by Bridget Brink.

The US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations has unanimously approved Bridget Brink for the post of Ambassador to Ukraine. The diplomat may arrive at the American diplomatic mission in Kyiv in June.

Previously, Brink headed the American diplomatic mission in Slovakia. She has been with the US State Department since 1996 and over the years has focused most of her career on advancing her country’s policies in Europe and Eurasia.

Bridget Ann Brink was born to John and Gwen Brink in Michigan and is probably in her early fifties. It is impossible to say more precisely, because the US State Department has not yet announced the year of her birth. Brink attended high school in Michigan, graduating in 1987 and continuing her studies at the obscure private Kenyon College in Ohio. She received an MA in International Relations from the London School of Economics.

From 1997 to 1999 she worked as a political affairs officer at the US Embassy in Serbia, then until 2002 she worked in Cyprus. From 2005 to 2008, Brink served as the head of the political and economic service in Georgia. For some time she was in the US National Security Council as a curator for the Aegean Sea and the South Caucasus, where she coordinated US foreign policy in relations with Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Between her stays abroad, she has worked at the State Department in Washington, the European Department, and the National Security Council at the White House. In the spring of 2019, then-President Donald Trump appointed her ambassador to Slovakia.

Almost nothing is known about the diplomat’s personal life, except that she is married and has two sons. Judging by Brink’s Instagram page, she and her family love outdoor activities – she often goes to the mountains, rides bicycles, and travels.

The style of the new US Ambassador to Ukraine is very laconic and restrained, since Ms. Brink wears mostly strict black two-piece suits, pencil dresses, and decorates her neck with a pearl thread, which looks very elegant.
