Members of the feminist group Les Colleuses unfurled a banner and lit smoke bombs during the Cannes Film Festival to draw attention to the issue of violence against women.
On a long banner was a list of 129 female names. According to activists, every woman on the list over the past 75 years has been killed in France precisely because she was female. In the world, such a crime is called feminicide – the deliberate murder of women.
The action took place before the screening of the film Holy Spider (“Holy Spider”) by Swedish director of Iranian origin Ali Abbasi. The film tells about the real crimes of the Iranian serial killer Said Khanai, who killed 16 prostitutes. According to the killer, he was on a sacred mission to cleanse the streets of sin. Abbasi wrote the script for the film together with Afshin Kamran Bahrami. The main roles in the film were played by Zar Amir Ebrahimi and Mehdi Bajestani.
Also according to a Variety insider, the red carpet event was a publicity stunt in advance to promote the film and draw attention to it. This is also indicated by the fact that, unlike other protests, the guards did not disperse the Les Colleuses activists.
