On Monday, May 23, renowned coach Gerry Russell Sr. passed away.
The American coach who helped his son Gary Jr. win the 2008 Olympics and the WBC featherweight title has died at the age of 64.
It is reported by Boxingscene .
Russell has struggled with the complications of type 2 diabetes in recent years and has also suffered several strokes. In December, his left leg was amputated, limiting his training ability.
Four of Russell’s six sons became boxers and achieved amazing results under his tutelage – all four won national Golden Gloves titles, and two of them, Gary Jr. and Gary Antoine, made the US Olympic team. Gary Jr. remains one of the most talented fighters in the sport despite losing his title to Mark Magsio in January.
Recall that Ukrainian Elmir Nabiev won his debut fight at the European Boxing Championship 2022 in Armenia.
