The leadership of the English Premier League (EPL) has given permission for the sale of London’s Chelsea by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.
Previously, the deal was in jeopardy . Abramovich did not provide legal guarantees of where the proceeds of 2.5 billion pounds would go, although he had previously assured that he was ready to cover the club’s loan (1.5 billion) and direct the net income to the fund to help victims of the war in Ukraine.
The media later reported that Abramovich and the British government had settled all differences. After that, on Tuesday, May 24, the English Premier League on the official website announced its consent to the sale of the London club.
The new owner of Chelsea will be an American consortium led by billionaire Tod Boely. In order for the management of the club to pass into the hands of an American businessman, it remains to receive approval from the UK government.
The final decision is to be taken in the coming hours after ministers consult with their counterparts in the European Commission.
Note that the deadline for closing the deal is May 31. If all formalities are not agreed, the club may be disqualified.
