He operated under shelling: the story of a doctor Kupin from Kharkov, who did not leave the hospital for more than 82 days

For almost three months of a full-scale war, our doctors have been saving Ukrainians every day from fragments of shells and balls, helping the injured under the rubble of shelters or running away from danger. The story of doctor Kupin is one of the thousands of life stories of heroic Ukrainian doctors who, side by side with the military and rescuers, are at the forefront of our defense, treating not only wounded bodies, but also souls.

Doctors are bringing patients back to life , which for many will no longer be the same as before, but at least it will be.

The Ministry of Health told about Vladimir Kupin, head of the orthopedic and traumatology department of the Kharkiv Regional Clinical Traumatology Hospital.

From the very beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia, Vladimir Kupin, along with most of his team, remained at work, working and helping patients.

The medical institution turned out to be in one of the most shelled parts of Kharkov – the front line passed very close – but did not stop working for a moment.

Doctors were in the hospital around the clock for 82 days and only from mid-May could spend the night at home if they wished.

“As we all from the very beginning of the war admired our people, our defenders, so I am fond of my colleagues,” says Vladimir Ivanovich.

He added that some of the team lived for a while in the hospital with children, but still continued to do their job.

According to the doctor, the war changed everything. Most often, patients with mine-explosive injuries applied: both military and civilian. Among the latter, the number of elderly people has significantly increased – fleeing from shelling, they fled, often fell, got injured, broke their limbs. They also suffered from pain, could not move, and were also given medical attention. Already in the first days of a full-scale war, the hospital suffered from shelling – many windows were knocked out in the building, and the wards were partially damaged. Doctors had to cover the windows with blankets, because the temperature outside was below zero.

Most of all I dream of peace, so that the bombing and shooting will stop. I want families to return, I want to hug my wife and children. I became a grandfather during the war – I want to meet my granddaughter, because she was evacuated, and we only see each other via video communication, – says the doctor.

The story of doctor Kupin is one of the thousands of life stories of heroic Ukrainian doctors who, side by side with the military and rescuers, are at the forefront of our defense, treating not only wounded bodies, but also souls. We bow before their heroism and thank them for their work. That’s the only way we’ll win.

Recall that on February 24, Russia attacked Ukraine , inflicting a series of missile and air strikes on our cities, including Kiev. The invaders continue to destroy Ukrainian villages, towns and cities with cruise missiles and air bombs, killing the civilian population and causing devastating destruction to the infrastructure.
