Russian Internet providers began to receive notifications from Google about the shutdown of Google Global Cache servers, which speed up the loading of the search giant’s services – primarily content from YouTube. They are local data storages in different parts of the country, designed to reduce the load on backbone networks: a huge stream of video traffic does not come from Google’s foreign data centers, but is first copied to Google Global Cache servers located in densely populated regions, from where it is already distributed locally. Disabling these servers will lead to a drop in the download speed of not only YouTube videos, but also many other Google services, including cloud storage, documents, etc.

Fortunately, not all providers are shutting down yet: a representative of Rostelecom said that so far he “does not observe shutdowns” of Google Global Cache servers, and MTS and Megafon announced a regular mode of traffic delivery. In the near future, Google employees will contact providers to decommission the equipment.
