Apple is announcing significant software changes to the iPad next week at the Worldwide Developers Conference, people familiar with the matter say. These innovations are part of an effort to make the device more like a laptop than a smartphone.
The next version of iPadOS 16 will have a redesigned multitasking interface that makes it easier to view open apps and switch between tasks. The OS will also allow users to resize application windows and add new ways to work with multiple applications at the same time. Currently, iPad users can either run apps in full screen mode like they do on the iPhone, or run two apps at the same time. It is also possible to add a smaller version of a third app on the side.
The iPad accounts for about 9% of Apple’s annual sales, and that figure has increased in recent years. But professional tablet users demanded an interface that felt more like a laptop. The iPad hardware platform now includes the same M1 chip as some Apple laptops. It provides a high level of performance.
WDC is expected to announce updates and other Apple software platforms. For example, iOS 16 is likely to get a new lock screen with widgets, an updated Health app, and new Messages features. There will also be redesigned apps for macOS, including an update to System Preferences. For the Apple Watch, the company plans to change watch faces, system navigation, and several apps, including an update to its fitness tracking features. In addition, a low power mode is expected.
