About a year ago, plans were announced to add 5.1 surround sound support to the YouTube TV streaming service. At the beginning of this year, the management of the service said that this feature would be launched “soon.” And finally, that “soon” came at the beginning of the summer – 5.1 sound support became more widely available.

The company announced that in addition to previously existing support for surround sound on traditional Chromecast devices and Vizio, LG, and Samsung TVs, multi-channel audio is now rolling out to Google TV, Android TV, and Roku. If a program is available with 5.1 audio, it should automatically play in multi-channel mode if you have a compatible hardware device.

Additionally, the company is “still working internally and with partners” to add support for 5.1 multi-channel audio to Apple TVs, Fire TVs, and gaming consoles.
