Recently, information appeared on the Web that Telegram is preparing a paid Premium subscription, which will expand the user experience for $5 per month. Today, Pavel Durov confirmed this information, along the way explaining why such a decision was made. According to the project manager, many users asked to raise the bar of restrictions inside the messenger (in particular, on the download speed and the size limit of the transferred files), but the company does not have the opportunity to do this for everyone due to the fact that the load on the servers and the costs of their maintenance will be “out of control”. Therefore, it was decided to charge for the use of advanced features, which will give a certain group of users more opportunities and keep the free mode for existing features.
Durov promises that for the free version of Telegram everything will remain as it was, and new functions will be introduced. He also noted that the launch of advertising integrations in Telegram channels exceeded their expectations, but in the future the project should be funded by users, not advertisers. The above cost is not mentioned in the official post, but, obviously, it will be just that.
