After a general assessment of the situation on the Ukrainian labor market, grc.ua analysts published a separate report on the IT industry, where, as you know, the highest salaries are. According to their assessment, the war quite tangibly hit the industry, which last year brought the country 4% of GDP – for example, the number of vacancies for IT specialists is 4.8 times lower than the pre-war level.

The impact of war on IT

grc.ua experts identify several factors that led to the reduction of the IT industry:

  • the fact that IT -specialists work not only in core companies (IT-specialists who worked at enterprises in other sectors of the economy often also fell under staff cuts and wage cuts);
  • product IT companies that worked for the domestic Ukrainian market lost projects with the start of the war due to the financial insolvency of the companies to continue development and implementation;
  • IT companies that worked with foreign markets faced distrust and doubts from foreign customers that Ukrainian IT specialists could meet deadlines and quality standards in the conditions of shelling and work on bomb shelters.

As of June, job offers for IT specialists account for 12.5% of all relevant ones on the grc.ua website. In percentage terms, this is almost as much as it was at the end of 2021 and even a little more than in January 2022. However, despite the high share of IT vacancies in the overall structure as a percentage, their number in physical terms decreased as a result of the crisis.

The largest drop in the number of vacancies in the IT field on the grc.ua website occurred in April (6.6 times less than in January 2022), since May there has been a positive trend at a slow pace. In turn, the activity of search engines increased, which is in the general trend of the state of the labor market during the war.

Where is the most work?

Most of the job offers for IT specialists are open in Kiev – the vacancies of the capital’s IT companies account for half (52%) of the information technology job offers published in June.

Lviv IT -cluster this month is looking for much fewer specialists than in the capital. Jobs for IT -shnikov in this region account for only 12% of all open in the field. An interesting fact is that the war changed the regional structure of the IT industry. If before the start of the war the largest IT clusters were Kiev and Kharkov, today Kiev has regained its positions lost at the beginning of the war. Lviv today occupies a confident second place in terms of the number of job offers. Since the beginning of the war, the number of IT specialists working in Lviv has more than tripled.

Some of the Ukrainian specialists went abroad. At the same time, in recent months, the number of those who are ready to leave for the sake of work has significantly increased. If during 2021 this figure was 34% of all CVs of IT specialists, then with the outbreak of the war, there are already almost half (47%) of the total number of IT specialists who posted their CVs.

Which IT professionals are needed the most?

Most IT employers are looking for engineers and developers. For these specialists, the largest number of vacancies was published in June in the professional field of IT . Also in demand are specialists in enterprise management systems (ERP), web engineers and web masters, support specialists, system administrators.

It should be noted that in addition to purely technical specialists in the field of IT , 18% of vacancies today are open to specialists in non-technical specializations. Designers, technical writers, recruiters, project and product managers, IT product sales managers, marketers. So, almost every fifth vacancy in the IT field is for humanities or other non-technical specialists.

IT salaries

The average offered salary in the professional IT -sphere in June is UAH 70,900 against UAH 103,500 in May.

Since the beginning of the war, the average salary in the IT sector has hardly changed. At the same time, in the market, the average salary in all professional areas decreased by 10% compared to the pre-war period. Some professional areas felt the halving of wages, some were not affected so much, but the negative dynamics of wages was present in almost all industries. In June, the general decrease in wages in most professional areas stopped. The exceptions were the industries with the highest salaries – IT , top management and consulting. The salaries of highly demanded specialists in the field of marketing, advertising and PR, medicine and pharmaceuticals have also decreased slightly, as well as the salaries offered by employers to the lowest paid specialists with no work experience and students.

As for the IT industry, the largest share of vacancies (42%) has the lowest salary in the field – from UAH 31,900. Every fifth vacancy offers a salary of 63,900 UAH. In 17% of the proposals, a salary of 95,900 UAH was announced. A high salary from UAH 127,900 is offered in every tenth vacancy. Vacancies with high monthly compensation from UAH 159,900 8% of all relevant in the field.

Salaries in the context of IT -specializations

The level of salary in the IT industry depends on both experience and specialization. High average wages for specialists working on gaming software. They are offered an average of 87,700 UAH. Web masters and web engineers receive an average of 81,200 UAH. Also, high salaries are offered to specialists in enterprise management systems (ERP) – UAH 77,800, as well as developers and programmers – an average of UAH 76,000.

The lowest salaries in the professional field of IT, Internet, telecom are those who specialize in content creation (on average UAH 15,600), testers (UAH 19,800) and telecommunications specialists (UAH 17,000). Employers in the sphere also offer low salaries to analysts (UAH 26,300 on average), as well as to beginners and those who have just started their career path in the IT field and have minimal experience (UAH 20,000 on average).

Desired experience in IT

Traditionally, most often they are looking for specialists with work experience from 1 to 3 years. For them, the majority (56%) of open vacancies in the field. Less work for experienced professionals, only 3% of vacancies are open to those with more than 6 years of professional experience.
